January Recap
- Genesee County Literacy Conference - On Saturday, January 25, 2020 the GISD proudly celebrated 20 years of the annual Genesee County Literacy Conference. With over 125 participants in attendance, this year's conference boasted keynote speaker, Kathy Bumgardner, over 20 different breakout sessions, over 15 vendors and more! The GISD is proud to offer this exciting, learning opportunity to local educators.
- Writing Workshop - During this workshop held on January 14th, participants looked at benefits & components of the Writing Workshop model as well as how to get it started in the classroom.
- The Elementary ELA Leadership group met on January 23rd.
Math
- AVMR Fractions - This six day series began on January 21st and supports teachers in understanding the complex numeracy topic of fractions with the goal of facilitating student advancement in fractions concepts.
- The Secondary Math Leaders group met on January 15, 2020 and continued exploration and discussion of Common Core, creating quality math units/lessons, and experiencing research-based strategies for improving classroom instruction.
- Number Talks at the Secondary Level - This workshop, held on January 27th, introduced educators to a Number Talk and teaching practices that support the use of Number Talks in the classroom.
- AVMR PLC Group - This ongoing workshop provides support for teachers who have completed the AV-MR Course and day four of this series was held on January 28th.
- Building Numeracy through Mathematical Practices - Day two of this three-day series was held on January 29th and explored Number Talk and the teaching practices that support the use of Number Talks in the classroom.
Science
- Elementary School Science Leaders Meeting - The first meeting of this group, facilitated by our new STEM/Science Coordinator, Michael Pillay, was held on January 14, 2020.
- Ligon Outdoor Center - The 2020 Ligon Winter Specials are underway for grades 2 through 4. These programs are full-day special programs offered for FREE. All programs are led by Ligon staff to combine grade level content, team building and FUN! For more information, please contact Dena Prevett at 810-591-4487.

Elementary Social Studies Teacher Leaders

AP Calculus Network
These meetings will be held as a support network for Advance Placement and Higher Education Calculus teachers/professors to increase knowledge & information sharing. Some topics to be explored will include College Board and student preparation for AP exams.

Adding Coding to your Physics or Physical Science Class (ICSAM Introduction)
This one day workshop is an introduction of how to integrate coding into your physics or physical science classroom. It is important to note that you need no knowledge of coding to be a part of this. The team from Michigan State University will guide you through the process.
If you decide you would like additional training, Dr. Caballero and his team offer a more detailed workshop that runs over several days in the summer free of charged.

AVMR PLC Group
This series will provide ongoing support for teachers who have completed an Add+Vantage Math Recovery Course (AV-MR). Each session will focus on one specific topic that will reconnect teachers to the Teaching and Learning Cycle of Math Recovery® that will give teachers the opportunity to discuss assessments, instruction, groups and data throughout the year.
