SUMMER BOOK DAY 6/19/15
....putting books in the hands of children since 2014....
"One benefit of summer was that each day we had more light to read by." ~ author Jeanette Walls ~
Vernon Township Public Schools is about to embark on it's second year of the K-12 summer reading initiative. Be sure to check out your child's school website for "Summer Book Day" events and the library media website for important summer reading information. Here's why every student must engage in summer reading:
- Prevent the summer slide!! Research states that average students will lose from one to three months of reading progress over the summer break.
- Maintain reading momentum!! Your child has been reading all school year and this needs to continue during the summer.
- Summer is a great time to engage in "choice" reading. Research shows that when students choose what they read, they read more, understand more, and are more likely to become life-long readers.
- Summer reading sustains reading skills and research suggests that it improves overall vocabulary and reading comprehension.
And the English Department Awards go to.........
Hadley Benneyan (pictured left), the English Department Academic Scholarship Award recipient, and Violet Reed (pictured right), the English Department Literary Excellence Award recipient, are seen here in one of their favorite escapes-the English Department book room!!! Passionate readers since they were young children, Hadley and Violet embrace all of the value that literature affords and understand that reading is a year round sport! Violet appreciates that literature allows readers to discover cultures, time periods, and ideas that they otherwise would not know about. This summer she looks forward to reading the rest of The Game of Thrones, Walden, and All The Light We Cannot See. Hadley wants younger children to know that reading helps to expand the mind and fosters creativity. This summer she is looking forward to reading, The Bell Jar, Catch 22, Dry, and What We Talk About When We Talk About Love. The Vernon community should take their cue from these wonderful ladies and "get their read on" this summer!!
At Walnut Ridge students go book shopping, giving them choice of their summer reads!!
