LITERACY RESOURCES
Reading & Writing Activity
Mo Willems Compare and Contrast Stories
- Visit: Scholastic Online
- Scroll down to Day 7 Activity
- Listen/Watch the Mo Willems story, Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus.
- Read the story Car Safety
- Use the venn diagram below to compare what is the same or different in each story.
How would you like to get to school? Invent a fun new vehicle you could use to get to school! It can be a bus, car, bike, or anything else you can think of!
- Draw a picture of it. Label all the cool parts.
- Then write about how it works. How does it move? How many people can use it at once?
- Last, come up with one tip about how to stay safe in your vehicle.
Reading Activity:
- Visit Reading A-Z/Raz Kids
- Choose a book and listen to it, read it yourself, and then complete a comprehension quiz.
- Take a video of yourself reading. Listen to the video and share with family.
Printable Literacy Activity:
- Complete two pages from the My Home Activity Packet (PDF below) - Your Choice :)
Writing Activity:
- Go for a sensory walk outside. As you walk, talk about what you hear, smell, see, and feel.
- Using your journal writing paper/notebook, draw & color a picture of what you saw, heard, smelled, and felt on your walk. Write an opening sentence that includes what you did (Ex: Today my family and I went on a walk in our neighborhood.) Write a sentence for every sense that you used! (Ex: I could hear birds chirping in the sky.)
- Remember to use your writing goals. Start a sentence with a capital letter, use spaces between words, use the high-frequency word list to write them correctly in your sentences, stretch out the sounds of unknown words and write it’s beginning, middle and ending sounds, and end the sentence with a period.
Word Study Activity:
- Write your Sight Words on little flashcards or pieces of paper.
- Play Sight Word War with a family member
- Take turns flipping a word over, whoever reads the word first gets to keep the card. The player with the most cards at the end of the game wins!

- Visit Storyline: http://storyline.com/
- Choose a book and listen to the reader.
- Draw about your favorite part of a story.
Scholastic Online
- Visit Scholastic Magazines
- Pick a scholastic activity of your choice to complete.
- Practice handwriting in the Handwriting Without Tears Booklet.
- Use chalk to practice writing letters and/or high-frequency words on the sidewalk.
- Complete a page in the packet that was provided to you.
- Practice your Sight Words

Number Concepts-Writing Numbers in Different Ways
- Watch this Jack Hartman Video called How to Show Numbers
- Write the following numbers in 3 different ways: 16, 23, 35, 44, 57, 68, 71, 89, 92
Skip Counting Activities - Counting and Cardinality
- Watch this Jack Hartman Video on counting by 2s
- Then do this Exercise and count by 5s video.
- If you have access to a printer, you can print the document below with skip counting activities,
- OR if not, you can have your child write the numbers by 2s on a piece of paper, cut them up, and put them in order.
Practice Money
- Practice identifying coins, quarters, dimes, nickels, pennies.
Number Concepts: Adding and Subtracting Numbers
- Grab a deck of cards.
- Flip over two cards. Add or subtract the numbers you flip. Jacks are worth 11, Queens are worth 12 Kings are worth 13 and Aces are worth 1
- Challenge! Try it with 3 cards!
