An Important Message from the Superintendent
The Jefferson County Health Department is releasing school-aged COVID-19 case data to each municipality in Jefferson County and Mayor Choat and I received the information today.
The good news is there is no evidence of the virus spreading in our schools, but we do need help from parents in the out- of-school activities. I would like to thank everyone for their help in reopening Trussville City Schools and helping us stay open during this pandemic! Working together means winning together.
Mayor Choat stated, "We are proud of Trussville City Schools and their attention to the safety of our students at all times, especially during the pandemic. We have a best case scenario in our school system with the Board, Superintendent, faculty and staff starting school on time for our community while utilizing social distancing, masks and handwashing to provide a safe school environment. The numbers of positive cases in TCS submitted by the Jefferson County Health Department are evidence of a successful reopening according to Dr. Mark Wilson, Jefferson County Health Officer."
We are very pleased with the numbers and the message from Dr. Mark Wilson in the memo below. We also appreciate Mayor Choat's kind words.
Sincerely,
Dr. Neill, Superintendent
Dear Mayor Choat and Superintendent Neill,
We ran numbers of COVID-19 cases within your city limits, with special attention to school age children, to give you a sense of the context for school reopening. Note that I have some limitations on the level of detail I can provide due to HIPAA regulations.
Between 6/28/2020 and 9/19/2020 the city of Trussville had 585 residents confirmed to have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, out of which 137 (23.4%) were in the 5-18 year-old range (school age).
To give you a sense of the trend, here are the numbers of school-age cases by 4-week periods:
6/28 – 7/25: 40
7/26 – 8/22: 25
8/23 – 9/19: 72
The average age among these school-age cases has been about 15 years old.
It is often impossible to determine exactly where someone became infected with the virus, we are not aware of any cases that were contracted at school during class time, thanks to the precautions you have put in place. We remain concerned about activities that occur outside of school where the virus is spreading. Also keep in mind that there are certainly many more people who have been infected who were never tested.
