Happy May!

You're in the homestretch! I know you continue working hard during the summer, but hopefully it also means some sleeping in and sunshine are in store for you as well!


The Literacy Team thanks each one of you who attended the Community of Practice Kickoff meeting yesterday. The collaboration was incredibly energizing and has us excited for what's in store. We are going to do great things together!


We know ISTEP testing prevented many of you from making it, and we look forward to meeting you next time! Until then, continue letting us know how we can best support you!

Summer Slide

While the phrase "summer slide" may elicit images of water slides and playground frivolity, most students lose about two months worth of reading skills during the summer. The question for teachers then becomes, how can we get kids so excited about learning during the summer that they are motivated to continue exercising the skills they developed over the school year? Is there a way to send them off for the summer with a love of reading so deep they head straight for the library?


According to Scholastic, reading just six books during the summer can prevent a struggling reader from regressing. Encourage children to read something every single day, even if it's a TV guide or cereal box. It's even more impactful if they read aloud.

Community Spotlight

Allyson Peterkin

I am the Literacy Coordinator for Indianapolis Public Schools. My main responsibilities are supervising and leading all K-6 and K-12 district-level instructional coaches, providing instructional guidance to schools, planning and supporting district literacy initiatives, and organizing events and programs that support literacy. I am also responsible for analyzing and utilizing reading data and providing professional development around all things literacy to teachers, building level instructional coaches, and administrators. We are focused on implementing balanced literacy in our district with a heavy emphasis on guided reading. I have spent the last 16 years learning, implementing and teaching others how to implement guided reading, and it is a passion of mine. One of the areas we have been focusing is using data from running records and anecdotal notes to inform instruction. I truly believe you don’t know what they need until you listen to them read!
