Mrs. Delair's News!
How is this possible that we have just two months left before summer vacation? April seems to have been incredibly short and fast paced. We have completed state testing with ease! I am so proud of our students and the hard work they put in to all six days of testing. Now we are moving on to new units and lessons and discovering that learning is really endless. As May approaches, field trips are popping up and we are hoping for some great weather! Be on the lookout for reminders and forms for your upcoming field trips.
We are also going to start an HSA fundraiser. I have taken a peek at some of the items we are selling and I do believe this will be a hit! HSA provides us with so many opportunities throughout the year that helping us out through your purchases are so important.
I wish I could list all of the happenings in May, but there are just so many. We have an author visit, drama club practices, science testing, concerts and more! I will do my best to keep up on Facebook and Remind! Most importantly, we are continuing to see those smiles. We seem to all be getting a little healthier (we were hit with fevers for a long while) and are getting outside! I hope you all are having a wonderful spring and I look forward to seeing everyone during our May events!

Kindergarten May News!
The children are really blooming this time of year! Spring is certainly in the air and the weather is beautiful. Please send your child with appropriate outside play shoes and a light jacket or sweater for the playground! We are learning about plants as part of our Common Core Curriculum. We will also be learning all about our 5 senses. We are so excited to go on our field trip. On May 6, we will be traveling to Binley’s Florist to learn all about different types of flowers while using our senses. Next stop will be to Friendly’s Restaurant. This is a perfect time for your child to show their restaurant manners and represent Moreau Elementary in a positive way.
The Kindergarten will be busy reading and learning about addition and subtraction in Math. Please remember to use the addition and subtraction flash cards to build your child’s math fluency and be sure to review the sight words and read with your child every night so that you can see how far they have come. This will help your child strengthen their sight word vocabulary, and master their math facts to ten.
Please be sure to check your child’s folder each night to review important notes and newly introduced information in school! Also, please check with your child to see if they need any new supplies to finish the year. The end of the year picnic and moving on celebration is just around the corner.
Happy Spring,
Mrs. Johnson Mrs. Howk

First Grade!
Hello Parents!!
The First Grades have a lot of activities planned for the month of May. First and foremost, we will be hatching eggs in our classrooms in a few weeks. If all goes well, the chicks should arrive at the end of May. From now until then, we will be doing many chick activities including writing in a journal about the daily growth of the chick inside the egg, candling the eggs to see what the inside of the egg looks like, and lots of fun crafty projects. We would like to thank the Gifford Farm for donating the eggs. We couldn’t do this without them.
Secondly, we will be planting seeds to help us learn about the about the life cycle of a plant, and lastly, on June 3, we will be having our own Sheep to Shawl program. The children will learn about the process wool goes through to become a useful product. If we’re lucky, we may actually see the sheep being sheared. It’s very exciting!
Thanks for your continued support.

Second Grade Update!
We still have quite a bit of material to cover over the next two months. The pace will be fast, but we are confident that all of the students will be able to handle the extra demand.
All of the students have been working incredibly hard on all of the new material. Be looking for information coming home this month about our next field trip to
Adirondack Animal Land in June.
As we move into May and June, our E.L.A time will focus on many different Science themes. Everyone will certainly enjoy it.
Math topics will move into measurement, money, graphs followed by shapes, time, and fractions.
Additionally, it would be a great help if you could refill the school supplies for your students. This time of year all of their supplies seem to run a little low. Please ask your student what supplies are running low.
Thank You,
Mr. Armenio and Ms. Bresnahan
Third Grade
Dear Families,
We can’t believe it’s May! It’s nice to be out in the sunshine. We’ve had a beautiful Spring so far! We also hope you had a wonderful Spring Break! It was late this year, but we made it!
Thank you to all the families and their support during our State exams. Our students have worked so hard. In Math,we’ve finished our graphing unit, and next we’ll begin learning about perimeter and geometry. We’re on our last module for the year! Wow! It went by so quickly!
In Science we’re learning about the Rainforest, it’s a fascinating place! We’ve been discussing the different animals, people, and environments on our unique planet, and how important it is for some animals to adapt to their surroundings. We’re also learning about how important the rainforest is to animals and people! We will be going to Moreau State Park on May 26th for a field trip! Yay! J
Thank you for being such wonderful families; it’s been a pleasure to get to know you and your students this year!

Fourth Grade Colonial Day!
On Tuesday, April 12th our 4th graders were transporter back in time to Colonial America! Our annual 4th grade Colonial Day was a huge success! Our students had a wonderful time making butter, making a colonial toy, a quill pen, ink and doing tin punching! Thank you so much to our wonderful parent volunteers who helped out that day!
We also had a very special visitor, Ranger Joe Craig from Saratoga Battlefield! He spoke to our classes for a long time about the life a Continental soldier while at Saratoga. We all learned something new from Ranger Craig and we even got to check out some of the uniforms from the time. We had such a fantastic day!
Currently In Fifth Grade....
In math, fifth graders have been finding area of rectangles with mixed number dimensions. We used the area model to solve problems, and then learned a more efficient (but abstract) method. Our last unit of study is graphing on the coordinate plane.
In social studies our fifth graders will begin to learn about the Civil War. Throughout this unit, students will participate in many hands-on activities including: writing secret letters, a Harriet Tubman Web Hunt, and an Internet challenge. Students will also read several pieces of literature that allow us to better understand what life was like for slaves. We will move on to discover the causes of the Civil War and key people during this time in history.
In reading, our fifth graders will begin to read the book, Wonder. It’s a great read! Students will work to complete portfolio projects of choices of fun projects along with this book! It's a lot of fun, we will have them on display soon!!
In science, we just modeled the Solar System. Students drew the planets at a scale of 1mm=1000 km. That worked fine for drawing the planets, but when we spaced them out, we could only fit the first four planets on school property! Wow, the Solar System is huge!
Fifth graders have a lot of fun coming up. In May, we will be visiting the middle school and meeting the 5th graders from all of the schools. Next year, they will be our classmates! The beginning of June brings the Bronx Zoo. They have lions, and tigers, and bears! And gorillas. And elephants. And komodo dragons…. We can’t wait!
