Reading Strategies
Talk Like the Character
Level: Emergent
Genre: Narrative
Skill: Fluency, Expression
Strategy: Storytellers make their characters talk. Think about what's happening on the page, and when you open your mouth to speak, pretend you're the character talking. Think about what the character says and how he or she would say it. Say it just like the character.
Teaching Tip: This would be a great strategy to use when children tend to summarize what is happening on each page as opposed to using actual story language. You may need to model once or twice the difference between saying, "The family walked by and saw Henry but they thought it wasn't really him" and "Everyone shook his head and said, "Oh no. It couldn't be Harry." You may also want to exaggerate the expression and intonation with your example, showing a reading of a line in a flat monotone voice and an alternate, preferred reading in an expressive voice.
Prompts:
* Say it like the character
* Pretend you're the character. Say it just like him or her.
* That's what he said. But how would he say it?
* You're making your characters talk!
* You're not just telling the story, you're also making your characters talk.
* You said it just how the character probably said it on that page.
