A Reminder from Principal Kemmett
Since the holiday break, there has been an increase in electronic devices being brought to school, particularly smartwatches (i.e., the Apple iWatch). Students have been seen using them in and out of the classroom, and they can be a significant distraction to learning.
As per our handbook (attached below), all smart devices, including phones, ear buds, and smartwatches must be powered off and kept in backpacks or lockers during the school day. We will continue to remind students of this policy in the coming days and your help is appreciated.
On behalf of staff members at Furnace Brook Middle School, we appreciate your continued support of student learning.
POWER OF ONE AWARDS
On a daily basis we remind students that kindness is not something we do just once---it is a habit that should be woven through our personal constitution which drives our decision making and actions each day. We ask our students to remember that others are carrying burdens they might not know about which makes being kind, caring and respectful all the more important.
Congratulations, students.

FROM THE CLINIC
Message from the FBMS Clinic
ATTENTION: Parent or Guardian: Winter 2022/23
7th Grade Physicals are due: Please forward an updated physical, via e-mail or fax, to the clinic.
The peak of the cold and flu season is upon us. To prevent widespread flu in the school, we recommend that your child stay home from school if experiencing flu or cold symptoms. To decide whether or not to send your child to school, please consider the following guidelines:
Consider keeping your child at home for an extra day of rest and observation if he or she has any of the following symptoms:
● Very stuffy or runny nose and/or cough
● Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep)
● Headache
● Stomach ache
Definitely keep your child at home for treatment and observation if he or she has any of these symptoms:
● Fever (greater than 100 degrees and your child may return to school only after his or her temperature has been consistently below 100 degrees, by mouth, for a minimum of 24 hours)
● Vomiting (even once)
● Diarrhea
● Chills
● General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness or muscle aches
● Frequent congested (wet) or croupy cough
To help prevent the flu and other colds, teach your children good hygiene habits:
● Wash hands frequently
● Do not touch eyes, nose or mouth
● Cover mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, use a paper tissue, throw it away and then wash hands
● Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Colds are the most contagious during the first 48 hours. A child who has a fever should remain at home until "fever free" for a minimum of 24 hours. Often when a child awakens with vague complaints (the way colds and flu begin). It is wise to observe your child at home for an hour or two before deciding whether or not to bring them to school. Your child should be physically able to participate in all school activities on return to school. Keeping a sick child at home will minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom.
Please also take the time to click on the links below for flu guides for parents from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Thank you in advance for helping make this year at school as healthy as possible.

Charging Chromebooks
Our "loaner" Chromebooks are really for students who need repairs and are therefore looking to borrow a Chromebook during repair time. We see quite a few students come in with Chromebooks out of power. Please help us to remind students to power their Chromebooks at night so they are ready to work the following day. Thank you. We appreciate your partnership.
