Sophomores to Participate in SEARCH Survey September 26-27
Information for families regarding 6th, 8th, and 10th grade participation in the Attitudes and Behaviors survey: The SEARCH INSTITUTE: PROFILES OF STUDENT LIFE ATTITUDES AND BEHAVIORS survey is an anonymous survey used in our community since 2005 to let us make informed decisions on what prevention programs should be put in place and at what age those programs will have the most positive results to help maintain healthy communities, happy kids, and functioning schools. This survey also lets us know what we are doing right in our communities, as well as which topics kids and parents need the most support. We recognize some topics can be uncomfortable, and that is why the survey is not just anonymous but also completely voluntary. Opt out forms have been sent home with your student. If your student is in 6th grade, we hope that you will provide consent and opt your student in so we can better understand the health and well-being of our middle school and high school students. Thanks to the data collected in our schools, the Champaign County Drug Free Youth Coalition has been able to bring over a million dollars in grant funding into Champaign County. Without this survey data, these grant dollars would go somewhere else and we wouldn’t have been able to use that money to provide programs in our schools that teach students ways to resist alcohol and other drugs, help students develop problem-solving skills, or put security cameras in our school parking lots and parks. The questions on the SEARCH INSTITUTE: PROFILES OF STUDENT LIFE ATTITUDES AND BEHAVIORS survey are the same as many other surveys used across the country. This allows us to look at the data and compare Champaign to other places. However, students who indicate they have not participated in certain activities, drinking for example, are not going to get the more detailed follow-up questions. We recognize that it is your job to determine what is right for you student. We welcome questions. Please reach out to Stacey Logwood (slogwood@mhdas.org), the Director of the Champaign County Drug Free Youth Coalition, for more information, or to get a copy of the survey. You can also visit our coalition website (http://www.ccfcfc.org/drug-free-youth-coalition/) for information about prevention efforts in our community, as well as resources that you can use to talk about these topics with your youth. Our goal is to help shape the future health of the community by empowering all members of the county to take an active role in building thriving youth.
