Launching the Transformation
As we begin the second half of the school year, we have an opportunity to reflect on our progress and refine our focus. The transition to Common Core is different for each grade level - some are in their second year of full implementation and some are just beginning the journey. No matter where we are on the path, we have a shared goal and getting to that goal means we must work together. We must share our ideas and resources because together, we can achieve more than if we do it alone.
We certainly some exciting events to look forward to for the remainder of 2013-14 school year, including the new SBAC Field Test and Math Textbook Adoption. This newsletter includes important information on the following:
· Smarter Balanced Assessment Field Test administered this Spring
· Math Textbook Pilot
· Benchmark III Window is deferred
· Etiwanda Common Core Assessment in January and February
· Progress towards Etiwanda’s Common Core Implementation Plan
Smarter Balanced Field Test Spring 2014
As California prepares to pilot the new assessments from Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, our school administrators are working closely with the Technology Department to meet the technology requirements for administering the assessments to students in grades 3 - 8 during the assigned window of March 18 - April 24.
In October, Governor Brown signed Assembly Bill 484 which changed the statewide testing procedures in California and suspended the STAR program during the field test of the new assessment under the California Measurement of Academic Performance and Progress (MAPP) program. The new statewide assessment that replaces the CST and CMA, developed by the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC), is administered online to all students in grades 3-8 and grade 11.
The results of the new SBAC assessment will not be officially counted toward any statewide performance targets and student scores will not be reported for this school year.
Math Textbook Pilot
Our Math textbook pilot is well underway with two teachers from each site representing the interests and needs of teachers from their grade level. For the first time, all teachers are able to participate in the pilot and use materials with students in their classroom using the available online textbook. We encourage you to use and explore the materials with your students and give feedback to your site Math Pilot Committee members.
Benchmark III Window Moved to April
The window for Benchmark III has been pushed back to April 22-24 with the suspension of the STAR tests to allow teachers additional time to fully implement the ESD-developed Common Core lesson plans and explore the Math Pilot material. Results from the Benchmarks will be used to determine our progress towards school and district goals for the 2013-14 school year.
ESD Common Core Benchmark
The ELA Common Core assessment in January and Math Common Core assessment in February will provide students, teachers, and administrators with valuable information on our shift towards Common Core instruction.
A scientific sampling of assessments will be randomly selected from the district population (approximately 60-70 per grade level). The anonlymous selected samples will be re-distributed to school sites for scoring. Grade level teams using a four point rubric will score 12-15 samples and submit scores electronically. The information gathered through this process will provide schools and grade levels with information on district progress on math and writing, two critical areas in the shift to Common Core implementation. Additional details about the scoring process is available from your school site principal.
