Literacy Learning
Next week, students will review sight words, identifying the main idea of a story and recalling key details, and story elements such as: characters, setting, and events in a story. Students will continue to practice writing skills using a combination of dictating, drawing, and writing to tell about an event. Students will also revisit comparing two different story of how they are different and alike.
Continue to read with your child over the break! Review those sight words and stretching out CVC words. If you read a book, discuss the setting, characters, problem and solution. Students will benefit from reading and listening to quality literature both fiction and non-fiction. The best way to get students thinking about their reading is to write about it! This is a great time for students to practice stretching out words.
Math Memo:
We will continue our review of math skills taught this year. Specifically, being able to correctly identify the coins by name and value (use the study guide attached to practice); Composing and decomposing numbers since students are expected to be able to build numbers to 20 using double ten frames and cubes and understand place value.
When we return from winter break in January, we will focus on shapes! They will begin learning about two-three dimensional shapes such as cones, cubes, and spheres, how to compose and decompose shapes as well as learning vocabulary words such as faces, vertices, angles, flat, solid, quadrilateral, etc. It is very important that students begin to explain their "math thinking" by producing responses using numbers, words and pictures.
