CLASSROOM VISITS (K & 3rd)
Students who are transitioning from Casa to Taller 1 or Taller 1 to Taller 2, will be visiting their new grade classrooms starting on May 16. Please check the schedule and guidelines in the document posted in Google Classroom.
SUMMER WRITING CAMP
We will be offering a Writing Club the last week of July, 7/24 - 7/28 from 8:00-12:00.
It will be led by Jan’Na and Cassie. If you are interested in working those days, please let Gaby I. know this week. The number of spots available for students depends on the number of staff members we have. We will give priority to the students that need it the most. Jan’Na will share with us some criteria to help you identify who would you like to recommend.
RADIO PROTOCOL - HOW TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE HEARD
Before you speak; Listen - Is someone else in the middle of making or responding to a call? Wait until the radio traffic quiets
Press the “speak” button
Silently count to 2
Speak slowly and clearly into the microphone - be specific
For example“Magnolia classroom, Magnolia classroom”
or “SpEd to Colombina, SpEd to Colombina”
Let go of the “speak” button
Allow 10 seconds for a response
If no response, repeat the call
If no response after the second call, radio the area coordinator for support
Limit radio communications to short simple requests - do not use the radio for long conversations
Do not use children’s names over the radio (except when calling to carline)
If you are called on the radio - respond as quickly as possible so the caller knows they were heard.
Appropriate responses
“On my way”,
“This is Merlie”
or “Please call me at extension 102”
There may be other specific language established for certain student situations (those involved are aware of these - continue to follow your established protocol)
SAFETY IS A COMMUNITY EFFORT - PART 1
By this time of the year, we have all gotten very comfortable with one another and our families. When that happens, we often get a little more lax about our safety and security expectations. This is a friendly reminder of some of the simple things we can all do to help ensure everyone feels safe at school.
Never, never, never prop doors open and leave them unattended. If you must prop a door, someone must be standing watch.
Always have your radio on loud enough that you can hear it.
Keep the ringer and speaker volume up on your phone so you hear announcements
All visitors and service personnel are expected to enter through the front office and obtain a visitor badge from the receptionist. This badge should be printed with the individual’s name. In the event the visitor verification system is not working; visitors will be provided with a 2” x 4” visitor tag like the one in the picture.
Do not allow anyone to enter through the main entry or cafeteria doors. Direct them to the front office for access. (During arrival and dismissal, door monitors keep watch for unauthorized visitors)
Be aware of your surroundings. If you see someone you don’t recognize without a badge, ask if you can help. Redirect them to the front office.
Safety is a community effort - we are all empowered to keep us all safe
All staff members have the authority to make decisions regarding student safety.
Security Calls - When to use it - what will happen
A call for security does not affect the whole school - it is a call for additional support for a specific situation
Wendy will be the first responder for security calls; Merlie will be the backup in Wendy’s absence
A security call alerts all C-Team members to pay attention in case additional help is needed
When to make a security call
When there is someone loitering outside near the playgrounds or school, but they are not an immediate threat
There is a loose animal
When you see someone drinking or smoking near the school
If there is an upset parent in a classroom, hallway, or anywhere on school grounds and you would like additional support
If for any reason you feel uncomfortable
Be specific with security calls; “Security to room 204” or “Security to the cafeteria doors”
Hold in your classroom - Schoolwide - When to call it - what will happen
HOLD in your classroom- means that there is something happening in the building - it is not a threat, but we need to keep people out of the way. Everyone will remain in their classroom or office.
When to make a HOLD CALL
A child or adult is suffering a medical emergency
A fight in the hallway
A large spill or leak that makes it unsafe to move around the building
Be specific with HOLD; “HOLD, everyone stay in your classrooms” and repeat the call
The school will remain in HOLD until Wendy releases the hold.
Secure Perimeter - Schoolwide - When to call it - what will happen
SECURE PERIMETER - means that no one can go in or out of the building.
Make a SECURE PERIMETER CALL When there is someone or something outside that poses an immediate potential threat to student or staff safety. Such as
Police activity in the parking lot
A fight between two people outside
An animal that is behaving erratically or appears aggressive
Be specific with SECURE PERIMETER CALLS; “Secure, dangerous animal, no one in or out” and repeat the call
The school will remain in secure perimeter until Wendy releases us.
Lockdown - Schoolwide - When to call it - what will happen
LOCKDOWN - means there is a threat inside the building and we all need to hide
When to make a LOCKDOWN CALL
When there is someone or something INSIDE that poses an immediate threat to student or staff safety.
Be specific with LOCKDOWN CALLS; “LOCKDOWN, man with a gun, LOCKDOWN” and repeat the call
Everyone will follow lockdown protocol.
The school will remain in lockdown until the police release us.
If you feel unsure about any of this information, please contact your coordinator or Wendy for clarification.
GET A PET, BOOST YOUR MOOD!
Are you a pet owner? If so, you already know the joy they bring. Several studies have shown that pets can boost their owners’ moods and contribute to enhanced emotional well-being.
One reason might be that pets are typically attuned to their human owners’ feelings, behaviors, and emotions. Dogs, for example, can understand facial expressions and tone of voice. Pets will cuddle and snuggle in times of need and keep eye contact with their owners to let them know they have support.
