Spotlight on Literacy
Semantic Map
In order to enhance students' understanding of the different colonies they have been studying, Ms. B. Wilson's 8th grade Social Studies class completed a Semantic Map. Deven Bolton has provided us with a phenomenal example displaying the similarities and differences between each colony.
Previewing Vocabulary
Prior to reading the short story, "The Lottery," Mr. Alsip had his students create Frayer models to develop a better understanding of key vocabulary terms. By previewing the vocabulary, Mr. Alsip's 8th grade ELA students were able to clear up any misconceptions they may have had about the words, activate their prior knowledge, and aid in the comprehension of the overall text. Below is an example of Keasia Mack's work. After writing the definition in her own words, locating a visual, and putting the word in a sentence, it is clear that Keasia is ready to work with this word in context.
Top Down Topic Web
In order to activate their prior knowledge, Mr. Yordy and Mr. Elrod's 7th grade math students brainstormed ways they use percentages throughout their daily lives. By using a topic down topic web to organize their thoughts, students will easily be able to insert additional details and examples to the chart throughout their unit.
