Data loads, data requests, updates
Below are some data updates for SD-STARS users. The include data loads, data requests, and a notice on how COVID-19 impacts a process that usually occurs yearly in SD-STARS.
Data load: Dual credit
The 2019-20 spring dual credit data will be available shortly in SD-STARS. Data on students who participate in the state-sponsored dual credit program come from the Board of Regents and each of the technical colleges every term. Once loaded, these data will be available to schools via the five dual credit reports in SD-STARS.
Data request: 7th - 12th grade addresses
SDCL 13-28-50 requires districts to provide the mailing addresses of students in grades 7-12 to the South Dakota Board of Regents and technical colleges for the purpose of sharing information about postsecondary opportunities. The Department of Education used SD-STARS to complete this requirement for public districts. For those students who did not provide consent to share directory information, their mailing address was not provided.
Data request: FAFSA
The Department of Education used SD-STARS to pull a list of currently enrolled public school students in grade 12. This file populates the South Dakota Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Completion Portal. This portal is provided by the South Dakota Board of Regents and used by public school counselors and administrators to monitor students’ progress toward FAFSA completion.
Proactive Admissions, College Readiness Coursework
The department will not send out proactive admission or college readiness coursework letters in the fall of 2020. This is due to the lack of state assessment data and the likelihood that few of the 2021 senior class will have taken the ACT. Additionally, the SO.002.00-A – Proactive Admission and Remedial Coursework report in SD-STARS will not display data for school year 2020-21.
