Chronic Absenteeism Hurts the Entire School
Chronic Absenteeism is when students are absent from school more than 10% (17 days) of the school year. This is not necessarily for students who are considered truant as truancy occurs when a parent or guardian does not call into school to report or send a note or email explaining why a student is absent.
This indicator is worth 20% of our school report card and can be a serious problem in your children's educational process.
Absenteeism causes significant problems for school systems:
- Lower student test scores
- Negative school and district accountability ratings
- Reduced academic success
- Anxiety and school-phobia symptoms
- Distraction for students and teachers who are consistently present
Please help us out by sending your child to school as often as possible when they are not ill and only taking them out of school for vacations or weekend getaways when we have scheduled school days off.

2019-20 School Report Card
November 1, 2019
The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) released our annual School Report Card on October 30, 2019. You can view the Report Card at www.illinoisreportcard.com. The Report Card shows how well our school is progressing on a wide range of educational goals. We are proud of our students’ growth in Math, Science, and English Language Arts.
This progress reflects the investments we have made in ongoing professional development and curriculum updates and improvements. Our teachers, administrators, and staff, in partnership with you, are continuing to focus on raising student achievement. We are committed to elevating our curricular offerings as we empower our students to reach their fullest potential.
One component of the School Report Card is the summative designation – a descriptor of how well our school is meeting the needs of all students. This designation is based on eight indicators of academic success and school quality:
Math Growth (25%)
ELA Growth (25%)
Chronic Absenteeism (20%)
Math Proficiency (7.5%)
ELA Proficiency (7.5%)
Science (5%)
5 Essentials Climate Survey (5%)
ELPtP - English Learner Progress to Proficiency (5%)
Our designation for the 2018-2019 school year was Commendable.
For the first time ever, these designations and academic indicators appear alongside site-based expenditures – how much money our district spends per student at our school. With these two data points, we have the opportunity to take a closer look at the relationship between financial investments and student outcomes.
We welcome this opportunity to dive into our data and talk about additional improvements and investments we can make to support every student in reaching their goals. Our school is strongest when we all work together, so we encourage you to give us your feedback. We invite you to share this feedback by completing the 5 Essentials Survey. Parents may complete this survey by visiting https://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/
We at Hollis Grade School hold high expectations for all students and believe every student can meet our expectations with the right supports. Thank you for your continued partnership to ensure every child at Hollis is thriving.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us by contacting Superintendent Chad Jones or Assistant Principal Alisha Shoedel.
