Cav Time Corner
The beginning of a new semester is a fantastic time to start back with conferring with the students in your Cav Time about the books they're reading. Every minute counts when students are reading--you as the teacher get to optimize this time, and instead of finding yourself just looking around the room, redirecting students who might be spacing out in obvious ways, conferring (or having quick conversations with students about their reading) is an excellent way to nip distraction in the bud.
Think of it this way: if you're in a meeting, and someone hands out an article for everyone to read. You've got a lot on your mind, and may find yourself less-than-focused. If you're in the role of the reader, knowing that someone will be checking in with you one-on-one about what you think about what you've read, that you will be accountable (even in a low-risk way) for what you've read is a much better motivator to do the actual reading than just being asked to read.
When students read with the expectation of being "checked in with," they now have a purpose: I'm thinking about the story, forming an opinion about characters, deciding if I like this book and why or why not, instead of just staring at a page for minutes on end.
If you're looking for a no-prep way to start having these convos, find the Conferring with Readers "bookmark." You can find this in the Cav Time folder in Staff Share!
Keeping some quick notes on student responses is a great way to track over time how they're liking what they're reading, what their issues might be, and spark ideas for book recommendations you can give!
Thank you Mrs. Fowler for the decorations in the lounge!
Gimme 3... is meant to have you pause, reflect, and generate 3 ideas to the topic and share with someone.
