Show Tunes
Showtune dancing is a popular Broadway musical revue celebrating the songs of of Broadway composer Jerry Herman. Showtunes title was inspired by Herman's autobiography of the same name. Herman wrote many broadway musicals including Hello Dolly, Dear World, and Milk and Honey. Even before the turn of the century, Black Crook - regarded as the very first Broadway musical, which included interesting ballet dancing with dramatic acting. George Balanchine was one of the first choreographers of Broadway dance history, having created the 1936 edition of Ziegfeld Follies.
Modern Dance
Modern dance is unique to the 20th century. Although modern dance originated from Europe, it made its way to the United States by the 1930's. Modern dance was made to be a reaction against ballet. The point of modern dance is for the choreographer to be the dancer as well. The history of modern dance can be divided into three time periods, 1900, 1930, and after WWII. At this time, professional ballet dancers such as Michael Fokine began to react to ballet using modern dancing. Now, modern dance no longer relies on techniques but more on the theatrical element of dancing and lyrical emotions. Modern Dance also values a weighted use of the body in relation to the earth.
