BAKER ELEMENTARY

Welcome To A Cooler September!
I have had the pleasure of greeting many students each morning as we open the doors to Baker. I have enjoyed getting to know so many new faces, along with friendly waves and warm hugs from familiar faces. Next week, I'm looking forward to reading to each classroom.
This summer our staff had a two day conversation learning about Capturing Kids' Hearts. This is a wonderful process that supports educators building relationships with students, using common language to support red choices, and ensuring all students have an adult at school that is truly looking out for them and intentionally looking out for them. I will be presenting a bit and modeling some of these processes at our upcoming WEPA meeting on September 19. Please feel free to join us!
You can expect our Baker Bits newsletters on the first and third Friday of each month.
Enjoy your long weekend!

Capturing Kids Hearts
Timeout: This is used when an adult needs the attention of the class. When other students see the timeout symbol, they also create it, ensuring everyone has view within a short period of time.
Check: This is used when someone is breaking the Social Contract that was created by the class. Students are able to check each other and it is simply and gentle nudge, a reminder, to check the choices.
Foul: This is used when someone hurts someone else's feelings. When this symbol is used, we take a step back, and the student that was hurt receives two affirmations from the offender.
Dot Day - Thursday, September 15
What is Dot Day??? Dot Day was created based on the book "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds. It celebrates creativity and the arts. Students will be doing some dot day activities in media class! This is a fun dress up day for students. Wear your dots, stripes & patterns on Thursday, September 15.
WEPA Walk-A-Thon - Friday, September 30

You will be welcomed to join us the morning of Friday, September 30th to walk with your child.
Kelso's Choice
School social worker and counselor at Baker Elementary, Alexis Prins, wants to help all students learn how to peacefully and appropriately handle conflict. With the help of Kelso and his Choice Wheel, the students at Baker Elementary will be taught several positive ways to deal with conflicts. At school the students will be taught the difference between big problems and little problems. Students will be reminded they need an adult's help to solve big problems but they can try to solve little problems on their own or with the help of Kelso and Lilly, our friendly frogs!
This school year we want to give students the opportunity to learn how to use their conflict resolution skills at home. Kelso’s Wheel might be a great way to help students manage their emotions, resolve conflicts, be kind, patient, and inclusive to their peers and siblings.
