Kansas Nebraska Act
This created the territories in Kansas, opening new lands for settlement. Had the effect of repealing the Missouri Comprimise. This was a bill that mandated "Popular Soverignty". Let others decide if slavery would be allowed or not. Kansas was admitted as a free state in January 1861. Stephen Douglas made an underground railroad.
Emancipation Proclamation
This was a presidential proclamation issued by Abraham Lincoln on January 1st, 1863. This was a war measure during the Civil War, directed to all areas in rebellion. This was based on the president's constitutional authority as commander in chief of the armed forces. Around 50,000 slaves in regions where rebellion, but as the union army took control of confederate regions.
Gettysburg
Gettysburg battle was fought on July 1-3, 1863. In and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The battle involved the largest number of casualties of the entire war and is also described as the worlds turning point
Dred Scott Case
In March 1857, the US Supreme court issued its decision in the case of Dred Scott v. Stanford. The case had been brought before the court by Dred Scott, a slave who lived with his owner in a free state before returning to the slave state of missouri. The court found that no black, free, or slave, could claim US citizenship, and therefore blacks were unable to petition the court for their freedom.
