Message From Principal Engdall
Greeting Shaw Community,
We cannot wait to entertain you on Tuesday, December 6th (k-3rd grade), and Thursday, December 8th (4th-8th grade) at our Outdoor Holiday Tax Credit Concerts. Our young musicians and Mr. Bonds have a fabulous performance planned for you and we are looking forward to your tax credit donations! You will find a flow map attached as we have several events planned for the evening. You will enter through the primary gates into the Primary Outdoor Environment to enjoy a small show of our art displayed in the garden. From the Outdoor Environment you will go left to the concert seating area at the east end of the campus. Please remember to bring a blanket or your own folding chairs. Only lawn seating will be available. Concerts begin promptly at 6:00. Children must be in their classrooms by 5:30.
In the courtyard behind the office, Ms. Chan’s class will be serving a dinner of street taco’s, beverages, and an assortment of desserts. Dinner service will begin at 4:30 and concludes at 5:40 to allow enough time to eat and seat prior to the start of the concert.
After the concert you may visit our Scholastic Book Fair in the library/media center and then follow the luminarias to tour our Elementary/Middle School Harvest Garden to enjoy its lush beauty and a little bite. Mr. Moench and students will be your garden hosts.
PLEASE plan to stay for the entire concert and be respectful of the children performing. When transitions and conversations occur during the concert, it disrupts the concert for the entire audience. Your children will be held in the classroom prior to their performance and will return to their classrooms after. They will wait for you there, to be picked up at the CONCLUSION of the concert.
We will be recording the concert so that the children and teachers can view and enjoy the entire show together.
Wishing you the best,
Principal Engdal

Garden Update
Greetings!
What a week it has been! New hens arrived this week. Thank you Nelson! The flock is still adjusting to the new family members and Hanz is a bit overwhelmed. He could hardly handle our six red sexlink hens. I don’t know what he’s going to do with ten hens of all different shapes and sizes! Good luck Hanz!
Last Friday afternoon I smelled a malodorous scent around Tortie’s habitat and thought the worst. When I stuck my head into her burrow I was greeted by a hissing feral cat! The cat was perched on Tortie’s shell and looked very comfortable in her new den. I grabbed the spray bottle and sprayed the cat out. When Tortie crawled out I found three newborn kittens in the back of her burrow! We tried to relocate the kittens to an adjacent burrow, but the mother never returned Luckily, Ms. Wahid came that evening to take care of them. They are currently residing in her classroom. It was a cool turn of events. Sorry Mama cat.
Thank you to everyone who has completed my Google survey! I’ve received great responses from everyone. If you have not yet completed the survey, please do so by clicking the link below: https://forms.gle/c7wrfvXK2jZik5meA
There are still some upper elementary classes that need vermicomposting bins. Here’s a link to the Home Depot totes if you would like to sponsor your child’s classroom:
Here’s my email in case you need to reach me: james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org
Home Depot gift cards are always appreciated. Continue bringing your aluminum cans, coffee grounds, eggshells and bottle caps. You can leave them on the table outside the front office except for the bottle caps. Have your child drop them in their classroom bin.
If you have any flagstone cuts or wood cuts, we will also take them. We will also accept any tool donations for the field garden and/or ODE.
Enjoy your three-day weekend!
Mr. Moench

"You're invited to the next PTA JEDI meeting! November 20th 7pm
We will be continuing the brainstorm of all the ways our community can celebrate and learn about Augustus H Shaw Jr.'s life along with our schools history this year... as a build up to Augustus H Shaw Jr. Day at the start of next year.
We are launching our first PTA led Justice Equity Diversity and Inclusion Survey this week to gather feedback from the community, particularly those who haven't been heard a lot in the past. Here are the links to the google form, we will also be distributing paper versions as well. It is only a few questions and takes about 15 minutes to complete, please take the time to make your voice heard and help us improve your child's school :)

We will be continuing our discussion of cultural appropriation and community education around the issue. As November is Native American Heritage month, this is a good time to reflect on the difference between appreciating someone else's culture ( which can help us broaden our cultural perspectives) and appropriating someone else's culture (which is stealing, can be hurtful, and perpetuate stereotypes). We invite our community to bring this discussion home and to join us in our meetings if you want support or are curious about this topic.
