Principal's Message
Can you believe the first trimester is already coming to an end? I cannot believe how quickly the time has gone by. Next week we will be holding parent-teacher conferences, please be sure to attend this important meeting.
Green had a red ribbon door contest. Students were creative on how to stay "drug free". Congratulations for the following classrooms that won. Ms. Lim, Mrs. Matsuoka, Ms. Cunningham, Mr. Scarson, and Mr. Jun (library).
I need your help in keeping our school safe. Please sign in at the office anytime that you are on campus once the bell has rung. The students bathrooms are for students only. Parents may come to the office to use the restroom. Remember to drive carefully and follow the rules in the car loop. Also, if you are here during non-school hours and see unsafe or illegal behavior, please call the non-emergency police number (510-790-6800).
I want to remind you that while we love celebrating your children's birthdays at school we ask that you do not bring any food items to celebrate due to the many children with food allergies. Please talk with your child's teacher about other ways to celebrate. If you bring a food item to school to share, please be aware that we will not allow your child to pass it out.
Thank you all for the wonderful first trimester! I look forward to the rest of this amazing year!
Sincerely,
Ms. Johnson

GATE Information 2019-2020
Fremont Unified School District (FUSD) provides support for gifted and talented (GATE) students through differentiated instruction. We believe that differentiated instruction not only serves the needs of our exceptional students, but also enhances the entire educational program for all students.
GATE testing for 3rd grade students
All 3rd grade students will have the opportunity to be tested for GATE. The window for GATE testing is January 27, 2020 - February 14, 2020. Each school will set administer testing within this window.
The testing process is automatic and does not require parents of 3rd grade students to opt in. Any student whose parent does not want their child to participate in testing must submit an opt-out form to the Assessment and Accountability Department, 4210 Technology Drive, Room 280, Fremont, California 94538, no later than December 13, 2019. Requests submitted after the deadline will not be accepted.
GATE testing for 4th and 5th grade students
Students in 4th or 5th grade who have not taken the GATE assessment at FUSD have the option to take the GATE assessment. These might be students who are new to the district or who were opted out of GATE testing in 3rd grade. If your 4th or 5th grade child is eligible for GATE testing this year and you would like them to be included in this test, please submit an opt-in form to the Assessment and Accountability Department by December 13, 2019. 5th grade is the last opportunity for students to be assessed with the GATE test.
The window for GATE testing is January 27, 2020 - February 14, 2020. Each school will set administer testing within this window.
GATE identification for 5th and 6th grade students
Students in 5th or 6th grade who were not identified in an earlier grade may be considered for GATE identification through the professional judgement process. Teachers and/or parents may nominate students. A completed Nomination Form must be submitted to the school Principal by December 13, 2019. Additional information and forms are available in the student’s school office and may also be downloaded from the FUSD website.

Lost and found items not picked up by November 22 will be donated to a local charity.
Extended Absences from School
Per FUSD School Board Policy 5113.1, students who have 10 consecutive unexcused absences will be dropped from enrollment and may re enroll at FUSD Student Support Services upon their return. They will be assigned to a school with an available space at that grade level. This may not be the school they were attending before the absence.
Independent Study (IS) contract may be granted for absences between 5 and 10 consecutive days. You must apply for the contract at least 10 school days before the start of the absence. Permission to have an IS contract is at the discretion of the school and will be based on the student's academic performance and their history with previous IS contracts. Students are allowed 3 contracts during Kindergarten through 12th grade in FUSD.
No Independent Study Contracts will be granted for the first 20 days of school or the last 20 days of school.

Above all when talking to your child’s teacher about him/her, remember to be open! Do not try and tell a teacher what you think they want to hear; tell them your honest assessment of your child or a situation. We are here to help and work with you to have the most successful school experience possible for your child!
Tips for a Successful Conference
1. Plan for conferences. Talk to you child. Jot down questions. Glance over your child’s textbooks and the work he/she brings home. Think about your child’s learning style and study habits.
2. Ask questions about your child’s schoolwork, his/her relationship with students and teachers, and any class or school rules you don’t understand.
3. Stay calm. Don’t get angry or defensive, argue or try to assess blame. Concentrate instead on anticipating problems, finding solutions and developing a good working relationship with the teacher.
4. Share any information that might help the teacher develop a better understanding of your child.
5. Decide with the teacher what, if anything, needs to be done to support your child. Agree on plans, responsibilities and future steps before you leave.
6. If the conference did not include your child, talk with your child after the conference and share what was discussed. Be positive and encouraging.
7. Follow up. Implement your end of any agreement. Keep in touch with the teacher. If the plan doesn’t seem to be working, or if new problems develop, call the teacher and ask for another meeting. You are partners with the teacher in fostering your child’s learning.
