Mrs. Poliszczuk's First Grade Class
weekly update
March 3, 2017
We had another great, fun filled week! I can't believe we are in the month of March already!
This week in phonics, students practiced reading and writing words with the long vowel e sound spelled e and ey. Students also learned that compound words are made of two smaller words and adverbs tell when an action takes place.
In reading, students learned about the unique relationship between a woman named Penny and a gorilla named Koko. Students used text features to help them locate important information in the story. Students identified the topic and details within the text and video, "Meet Koko and Penny".
In math, we began unit 6, Addition, Subtraction and the Number System. In this unit, students will work on composing numbers with two and three addends. We will focus on making sense of addition and subtraction and will continue to solve story problems. This week, students worked on finding combinations for the number 10 through a number of review games. Students also played Counters in a Cup and How Many am I Hiding? to reinforce the idea of "missing part".
In Social Studies, students identified landforms and goods and services.
Students enjoyed our visit from Mobile Mining Experience. We learned about the life cycle of rocks and had fun cracking geodes!
