Dear South School Families:
We hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable Thanksgiving. It is amazing to think that winter break is just a few weeks away.
Before the Thanksgiving break, South students and staff enjoyed the Pie Throwing Assembly to celebrate the money we raised for Pack the Piggies. Please see the pictures and video from our assembly in the section below. Thank you to the teachers for volunteering to have pies thrown at them.
Please see the section below regarding the annual Art Expo at Forest View Educational Center on December 3rd from 12-3pm. Several of South's students art work will be on display during this event. Congratulations to our artists and Mr. Gnutek!
The entire school will be winter MAP testing on December 14th (Language Arts) and December 15th (Mathematics). We will be testing each morning beginning at 8:13am. Please see the section below for further information, and the daily bell schedule.
Our holiday Music Concerts are fast approaching. The Jazz Band and Choir will perform on December 6, 2022 at 7pm and the Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and Wind Ensemble Concert is on December 14, 2022 at 7pm.
South's Student Council is planning a Spirit Week for December 19 - 22, 2022. Each day, students will be asked to dress up to show their South spirit. See below for the themes for each day.
Just a reminder, South Administrators work closely with each grade level team to provide support to the staff members, students, and parents. This year Ms. Rosen is working with sixth grade. Dr. Perkins supports the seventh grade, and Dr. Morrison works with the eighth grade. For disciplinary situations, Ms. Rosen manages sixth-grade situations and Dr. Perkins handles seventh-grade situations. Both Ms. Rosen & Dr. Perkins split any eighth-grade disciplinary situations. If you have any questions or concerns specifically to your child's grade level, you can address them directly with your child's teacher, and as needed with the grade-level administrator.
We wish you and your family a wonderful winter holiday season!

NWEA MAP Testing
The NWEA MAP test is a computer-administered assessment that aligns with the Illinois math and reading standards. District 25 uses the information from the MAP assessment in a few ways: to help determine academic intervention groups, as an essential part of the advanced learning placement, and to identify student strengths and needs for the next school year.
All South students will be taking the NWEA Winter MAP assessments on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 and Thursday, December 15, 2022. Please remind your child to charge their Chromebooks, and bring earbuds to school for the testing sessions.
As a reminder, it is important for students to eat a healthy breakfast, and get a good night's sleep before testing so they can perform their best. Thank you for your assistance in helping to prepare your child for NWEA MAP testing. Please see below for the adjusted bell schedule.

RULER
Thank you to all who were able to join us before the last PTA meeting to hear a short presentation about RULER. The members of the RULER Implementation Team enjoyed sharing our progress thus far, and future plans as well. In the Q&A after the presentation, some parents asked for examples of RULER Charters, Mood Meters for home use, how to use the “Meta-Moment” strategy at home, and other important points. We thought the best way to provide this information was to create a centralized hub on the South homepage. Stay tuned for this addition in January! RULER information will be located under the “Parent Resources” icon and will not only give you an understanding of what your child is learning at school, but also ideas for how you can incorporate the RULER core tools at home. Here is a link to a recording of our RULER Parent Presentation.
