A Message To Families From Mr. Peck
Riverview Families,
I love so many things about our school and the people that make up our school community. But to me, the events that bring our school together are high up on the list of things that make Riverview special. One of those events occurred last week when our guest from Ghana, Fatawu, visited our 5th graders and taught them about African drumming. They showcased their learning during a school-wide performance on Friday with many 5th grade families in attendance as well. In just one short week, our students learned several different drumming patterns, dances, and chants and then had the courage to perform with HUNDREDS of people watching them. I encourage you to scroll down a bit and click the links to view each performance. You will love it! There is simply no limit to what these amazing young people can achieve when they are given opportunities to shine.
The story of our school is a great one and one that we want shared far and wide. We appreciate you sharing elements of our school story with your friends, family, and neighbors. We are so unbelievably proud of our learners, our educators, the families we serve, and the school we have built together through the years. I've noticed that the voices that are most critical of our schools are often coming from people who are not a part of our school community and might not have a clear picture of what it currently looks like, sounds like, and feels like to be a part of Riverview and Farmington Area Public Schools. Let's continue to work together to build a school that provides an overwhelmingly positive and impactful learning experience for children and then share our Tiger Pride with those around us. We appreciate your partnership and all the support you give us!
Best wishes for a great week!
Shawn Peck
Principal

I Love To Read Month Brings Fun Challenges To Riverview!
February is I Love To Read Month! And we ALWAYS love to read at Riverview! This month we have two exciting challenges to get kids excited about reading:
1. A school-wide 5000 book challenge. If our learners read 5000 books this month, Mr. Peck will wear a wig for an entire school day. They are keeping track of how many books they are reading in their classrooms and they can count books they read at home too. Our students are off to a great start and are determined to meet their goal. Please help support them by allowing some extra reading time at home this month.
2. A weekly "mystery reader" challenge. Each day on our morning announcements a clue is given about who our mystery reader is. Then on each Friday in February, the identity of the reader will be revealed when they watch a video of that person reading a story to them. This past week, we learned that our mystery reader used to play hockey, lived in a castle, loves Harry Potter books, and names turquoise as their favorite color. Who could it be??? Watch the video below to see who it is and to enjoy a wonderful story about thinking outside the box to create wonderful and special things.

We Need Your Help! Please Consider Being a Guest Para or Guest Teacher
Our paraprofessionals do so much at Riverview and throughout Farmington Public Schools. And when they need to be out of school due to illness, family situations, etc. it is often hard for us to cover all the responsibilities they take on. So we are asking parents, grandparents, neighbors, and all members of our school community to consider clicking on the link below and learning more about how to become a guest paraprofessional. It pays $15 per hour and being around our learners will also will give you such an amazing sense of purpose and joy, which is priceless.
Farmington Special Education Advisory Committee Transition Meeting To Occur Soon
Does your child receive special education services AND will be moving to a new building in our district next year? Or are you curious what the transition process is like and want to learn about it before your child’s transition year? Join the Farmington Special Education Advisory Council (SEAC) for a special evening related to this next step in your child’s education. The meeting is February 29 from 5:30-7:30 in the Farmington High School commons area (20655 Flagstaff Avenue). We will have special education teachers and staff from the elementary, middle and high school levels available to answer questions and provide information you may want or need to know. Childcare will be available for those who need it. Please email hbergstrom@farmington.k12.mn.us with questions.
Parent/Teacher Conferences Are Coming Soon; Signup Link To "Go Live" on Thursday
Parent/Teacher conferences will take place on Tuesday, March 5 (3:00-6:00) and on Thursday, March 7 (which is an early release from school so conferences will go from 12:00-7:00). A link to sign up for a conference time with your child's teacher will be shared this Thursday, February 8. It will also be included in future weekly bulletins. We hope to be able to connect with all of our families and share the latest news about all the tremendous growth happening at our school.
Please Limit Candy, Gum, and Flavored Drinks at School
Students are increasingly bringing candy, flavored water, caffeinated drinks, and gum to school. These are not allowed for snack or throughout the day. It would be very helpful if you would please remind your child that they need to stay at home.
Friendly Reminder: No Food/Treat Sharing - Even on Special Days
With Valentines Day coming soon we want to share a reminder of the ISD 192 health and wellness procedure when it comes to food. We strive to ensure a safe and healthy learning environment for every person here and due to the high number of allergies and food-related illnesses present in our schools we have restricted the sharing of food, treats, snacks, etc. This means that students should not bring in any food item to share with others, even on special days like birthdays or holidays. We kindly request that if your child would like to bring valentines to share with others in their class, that they stick to non-edible items. We appreciate your help in keeping everyone safe at school.
