Principal Corner: Attendance Notifications
We are always trying to refine our AMS attendance practices so that students are present and learning. The Texas attendance rules say that a student has to be in a class at least 90% of the time if they want to be sure to get credit for that class. In recent years this has become more difficult to manage. We have refined our practices to work with more families of students who are below that 90% attendance rate.
One of our newest steps is to implement periodic alerts when a student's attendance percentage falls below a certain threshold. We start with a "below 95%" notification and then another when a student's attendance falls below 90%.
Below 90% we are starting to get concerned about learning loss and trending toward possible retention. However, we understand that there are many necessary reasons for absences, so we can implement some practices, like seat time logs, parent meetings, etc. So if you have gotten one of those attendance notification messages, just know that we are trying to be proactive, before it becomes a bigger issue (i.e. below 90%).
