The Stagecoach History
- a stagecoach is a type of covered wagon that were pulled by horses or mules, used to carry passengers and goods inside
- they were used before the introduction of railway transportation
- the first stagecoach was built in 1827, costing $1200 to $1500 and weighed more than a thousand pounds
- the company that made the stagecoaches manufactured over 40 different types of carriages and wagons at that factory
Advantages
- around 1785, congress began the mail service by stagecoaches, it took a long time for a letter to get to its destination, but it great for communication back then
- later on stagecoaches were being used for groups of transportation, they became more updated with painting decorations and soft cushioned seats
Disadvantages
- one disadvantage includes problems with the stagecoach being secure
- sometimes the horses would run off and people jumped off, getting very injured. some children could get ran over.
- they also had no air conditioning and it got hot inside, and people got dehydrated
Inventors
- the inventor of the stagecoach was John Darlwin in September 1763
- a company was made as stagecoaches gained popularity, it was called the Abbot Downing Company
- that company created over 40 kinds of carriages.
- their base was in New Hampshire and they continued making carriages and wagons until 1919
- at their height, the company employed over 300 people
