June 7, 2023 - NEWSLETTER
Estimadas familias de Woodcrest,
Well, this is it! Tomorrow is the last day of school for this school year. I have loved getting to know your children and the Woodcrest community this year – it is definitely a special place! Thank you so much for the support you’ve given to our school community. It definitely “takes a village” to raise our children, and I feel very lucky to be a part of our village.
Let’s keep the learning going over the summer! Last week, each student was able to pick out four free books to read over the summer thanks to our PTO, a grant from the Lion’s Club and donations from Woodcrest families. Reading over the summer is a great way to minimize the “summer slide.”
Another learning opportunity available to our Spanish immersion students is Spanish camp this summer. This program is offered through Spring Lake Park Community Education. We will host two weeks of Spanish camp: the week of July 31 and the week of August 7. Be sure to register before the camps fill up!
We are still in need of host families and tío/tía families for our Amity interns next school year:
Host families would have an intern live with them for half of the school year, providing a bedroom and three meals a day to the intern.
Tío/tía families act as support families for the interns - Tío means uncle and tía means aunt in Spanish. These families support our interns kind of like our own aunts and uncles. They often invite them over for a meal, have them tag along on a family outing and give them a ride every once in a while.
Both of these are great opportunities to bridge school and home, offering opportunities to share language and culture! If you are interested in either hosting an intern or being a tío/tía family, please either contact me via email (jnyman@district16.org) or fill out this google form.
Again, thank you for a great school year! I look forward to seeing everyone in the fall.
In partnership,
Jaime Nymann
Principal

Contact the tech team during the summer: The tech team is available for students and families Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. to help with iPad questions, problems and repairs. Contact the tech team by emailing techsupport@district16.org or calling 763-600-5555.
District calendars for the 2023-2024 school year

Additionally, families will receive a 2023-2024 print calendar from the district this summer. This calendar will provide families with important school and district dates, events, information and contacts.

Ready, set, read: Resources for summer reading
The school year may be winding down, but that doesn’t mean the reading has to. In addition to resources available at your public library, your student’s school-issued iPad can help support keeping the reading going this summer. Check out apps that give students access to a variety of reading materials on their iPads:
- Sora – Through the Sora app, students can check out books or magazines, including electronic books they can download and read on their iPads from the public library. This app is available in Self Service. Filters in Sora are set to public library definitions. Students in grades K-6 are set to Juvenile. Students in grades 7-12 are set to Young Adult.
- MackinVia – MackinVia is Spring Lake Park School’s digital library. Students can download the app on the iPad from Self Service and log in to check out a variety of electronic books.
More information is available about Sora and MackinVia in the technology toolkit under Student Online Resources. Neither of these apps is required and they can be removed at any time from a student’s iPad. We encourage families to work with their children – especially younger children – when choosing resources from the library.
A year of SLP Online Elementary
Spring Lake Park Schools fully online learning model for grades K-6 is just wrapping up its first full year. Core to the experience is a 3-way partnership between at-home learning coaches (usually a parent or guardian), students and learning advocates (a certified Spring Lake Park Schools teacher).
As part of his personalized learning plan, sixth grader David Huston recently learned about sea lampreys in the Great Lakes. His learning took him all the way to the Duluth aquarium. David chose the project focus and his learning was developed and supported by his at-home learning coach, mom, Tina Huston, and teacher Sue Berge.
This year of learning with SLP Schools Online Elementary has included a lot of personalized, engaging and fun projects. David, Tina and Sue meet once a week to create David’s learning plan, talk about goals and reflect on learning. They are a team that’s found its groove. Read more about the SLP Online Elementary experience.

Golf Fundraiser - Support SLP Activities & Athletics
The 10th Annual Panther Foundation Golf Fundraiser is just two weeks away. Foursomes are filling quickly. There is still time to purchase a sponsorship and support the Spring Lake Park Athletic and Activity Programs in the district. Thank you to our many sponsors who help make this event possible and ensure our work is impactful for our students. Register and sponsor.
All-School Track and Field Day!
Yesterday, students participated in the all-school Track and Field, and man, they sure did have lots of fun!
We want to take this moment to thank all the parent volunteers that donated their time and made this event so much fun for all of our students.
Third grade Prairie Garden
Last week the third graders completed the final step of our annual prairie garden relay, which is planting back into our garden! We can continue to promote biodiversity of plants by monitoring the populations of our species and adding back the plants that are most needed. This then enables the garden to provide for a larger more diverse amount of insects, birds, pollinators, and animals!
Thank you to Track & Field Day Volunteers!
PTO sponsored the 2nd annual Track & Field day at WCSI. Over 90 volunteer spots were filled to help at various stations, including soccer kick, hurdles, javelin, tug of war, frisbee throw, sponge water relay race and more! Ask your student to see their score card and ribbon.
Mileage Club
Mileage Club was a great time this year and students completed 4,902 miles! Top participants included: Cormac S. with 52.25 miles, Ethan M. with 46,5 miles, and Rafael G. with 45.25 miles! Special treats went to the top three classes: Meinholz with 402 miles, Soto-Vargas with 366.25 miles and Magnuson with 311.75 miles. Top students in each class also received a special toe token. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped cheer on students, hand out prizes, and scan cards for mileage club this year!
WCSI PTO is now on BAND
To continue receiving emails about PTO events and volunteer opportunities, please make sure to sign up for BAND here. BAND can be downloaded to your phone, used on web browser or both. It provides a space where we can post sign-ups, conduct polls, have calendars that can link to your Google or Apple calendar, and have text/chat space for committees...all in one place! We will be discontinuing Konstella this summer.
Thank you to Volunteers who helped at the Free All School Book Fair
Thank you very much to all the volunteers who worked to set up/take down, cashier and prepare a free book fair for students last week. All students got to bring home four books for summer reading.
