PHS Update
April 16th, 2018
April Showers...
We would also promote this to the lower grades so that potential future Trojans can come and see the facility.
I have NOT yet sent the Trojan Update to parents, since I want to check in with science (Lee, Susan, Jen) about Thursday. But I will send something Monday afternoon. Please email me with feedback.
CAASPP testing continues with Math this week. Keep encouraging our students as they face some testing fatigue. Thank you, Debi, for keeping the CAASPP ball rolling and all the details and headaches that entails.
PAC Meeting on Tuesday - agenda coming Monday (please email me with any items you may have...)
We have hired a new counseling secretary, Deborah Gravelle-Watts, who should be starting on Monday. Please pop by and say hello if you can.
Have a great week
Open House Update and Much More!
Open House
After a series of conversations with some parents, students, and staff members at Petaluma High and the district, we have decided to postpone the Open House scheduled for this Thursday, April 19th in favor of a broader PHS Community Open House on Thursday, May 17th at 5pm. More details will follow but we hope to be able to show you some of the remarkable new updates at Petaluma High and how the campus in shaping up. We're excited to show off some of our new acquisitions in the academic environment (new computer labs in F1, F3, and A6, for example), new equipment in our Engineering labs, and the renaissance of PHS Athletics with the new turf field and amenities, new PHS Weight Training Center, the new pool (under construction but available for viewing progress) to go along with our updated gym. Please put May 17th on your calendars!
All that being said, April 19th will still see three specific events at PHS: (1) freshmen students in Ms. Boyes and Ms. Smith's Physical Science classes are invited to present their portfolios to their parents, either on this evening or during this week; (2) the Principles of Engineering class will present their amazing creations n robotics and engineering in F9, and (3) the Petaluma Trojans Bys Lacrosse team will host the Casa Grande Gauchos who they beat earlier this season 18-17 in the Battle for the Paddle at Ellison Field.
Please see the pdf below, a letter from Renee Semik, principal at PJHS, regarding some suspicious activity. We are monitoring as Petaluma Police investigate.
Please read on for other highlights from the past week and what is ahead.
Have a great week!

Trojans Rip Lions, Even Things Up in SCL
The Trojans hosted the hot El Molino Lions, who were looking to put pressure on the Trojans as the league season hits high gear. Previously, El Molino had knocked off the Piner Prospectors, a team the Trojans dropped a game to last week. Now the Trojans were looking to draw level in league. As usual, the Trojans had some reliable hitting: Danny Marzo had a three hit afternoon, driving in two, while Nick Andrakin and Kempton Brandis left the yard, all in an 8-3 Trojan win.
The homestand continues with the Trojans (8-4-1, 3-1) hosting Elsie Allen Tuesday before an important return bout with Piner on Friday.
Go Trojans!
NEW: Student Drop Off Adjustment
Soon there will be new signage to reflect these changes as well as more specific postings of when members of the public can use the facility. Thank you for bearing with us as we transition to the new stadium!

Swimming!
Petaluma Trojan swimmers had another successful day at the pool, more specifically, the Healdsburg Swim Center, where they swept the Hounds in an SCL dual meet. The Girls were 99-70 winners, while the Boys won 103-60. The Girls improved to 3-1 and the Boys remain undefeated at 4-0.
For the Girls, double winners included Ana Larson in the 100 Breaststroke and 200 I.M, and Shae Whaley in 100 Butterfly and 50 Freestyle. For the Boys, Michael Duffy won the 50 Freestyle and the 100 Backstroke, while Cooper Woods took the 100 Butterfly and 100 Breaststroke events.
Winning single events were Aurora Beaumond, Carmen Rico, Alex Starling, Gavin Newell, and Luca Binsfield-Debus. The Trojans missed sweeping all six relays by a combined 17/100 of a second. They did win both the Boys and Girls 200 Medley and 400 Freestyle Relays. 28 different Trojan swimmers contributed individual or relay points. That depth will be needed when Petaluma faces off against the reigning SCL Champion Sonoma Dragons this week, in Sonoma. The meet begins at 4:00 at the Sonoma Aquatics Club on Thursday 4/19.
The Sonoma Meet will be the final tune-up as the Trojans aim for the SCL Championship Meet, which will be April 27-28, at SRJC’s Quinn Swim Center. Thank you, Ms. Greeson, for keeping us up to date on swimming!
PHS Boys Golf in a Dominating Mood
This week, the Trojans continue their league slate with an away match at Healdsburg. See the article below!
Remembering Tom Griffin
His legacy is that we can individually and collectively change student lives for the better. He believed that when he questioned the ways things were done, he was making a difference for students. And he was right! We would do well if we retained just a bit of Mr. Griffin's brilliance and remarkable spirit. I will miss you, Tom! You were an amazing light.
Important Counseling Info: Online Courses + SRJC Summer
If your student is either currently enrolled in an online class or considering one for next school year, please keep the following things in mind. Online classes taken outside of PHS are not monitored by counselors or any PHS staff, so it is the responsibility of the parents to monitor work and progress towards completion. For seniors, classes should be finished up by Friday, May 18th (including taking the final) so that there is time to have the work graded and a final transcript sent to the counseling department. Please remember that online classes are not great for everyone's learning styles and sometimes even bright students struggle in an online environment. When classes are taken through PHS directly, we are able to provide more support via the teachers and the counselors, and when it comes to AP classes, the teachers are trained to prepare the students for the AP tests in the spring and the curriculum is supported through college board. Although online appeals to many, it is important to consider your student's individual needs and make sure that the plan is communicated to your student's counselor.
