News from Lions Park School
Letter from the Principal
Dear Lions Park Families,
This is an exciting time during our school year. Many grade levels have upcoming field trips. Our fifth graders are hard at work practicing for their musical on April 25th. There are many exciting units and projects underway. Second grade is starting their unit on the history of Mount Prospect. Third graders are researching famous people for their wax museum project. Fourth grade classes will be studying environments and observing some live specimens, such as mealworms. Fifth graders recently finished recording podcasts on researched topics of their choice. We are also conducting our spring benchmark assessments. We use the data collected in the spring to evaluate our programming, identify students who may qualify for enrichment and select students who may need intervention right at the start of the next school year.
As our staff continues the important work of this school year, we are also preparing for the 2019-2020 school year. One important upcoming task will be sectioning students into classes for the new year.
Sections are created according the the following criteria:
- Strengths and areas of need are considered for each child.
- Some students are clustered by these strengths and/or areas of need to enable push in or pull out support.
- Social Emotional Needs are noted and an attempt is made to balance the number of students needing support in these areas among the classrooms.
- We try to balance the number of boys and girls in each class.
As was mentioned in the March 22nd Paw Prints, we welcome your input into this process by inviting you to e-mail me. Please do not feel obligated to share input. The teachers have wonderful insight into the needs of their students, and are a critical part of this process. If you choose to share your thoughts, please include information about your child's learning style and the type of learning environment you feel will be the best match for your child's style. You may also include students you feel are or are not an asset to your child's learning environment. If there is a particular child you do not want your child to be sectioned with next year, it is important to write a letter stating this. We do not automatically separate students who have had conflicts. We do not guarantee that we can honor every request, but we seriously consider all input that is provided. Because of the complexity of the process, we do not accept requests for particular teachers and requests for a particular teacher will not be honored.
While classroom teachers and specialists are involved in this process, it is important that any input you have be sent to me, so that I am aware in case changes need to be made over the summer when the teachers are not working. Furthermore, pertinent information will be shared with teachers, but the letters themselves will be read only by me and Mrs. Bielenda, our assistant principal.
Please send letters to me via e-mail at kkelly@d57.org no later than Tuesday, May 1st. I assure you that our staff takes this task very seriously and puts a great deal of time and thought into creating the most balanced sections for the following year. We appreciate your support as we make our plans.

The District 57 Education Foundation is a non-profit organization comprised of Mount Prospect community members whose mission is to raise money to fund grants in the areas of curriculum, wellness, and technology. Grant requests may be written and submitted by district teachers, staff, and parents. The grants enrich the educational experiences of all students, helping them to achieve at their highest potential. Funded grants allow teachers to have access to the resources they need to support teaching and learning at Westbrook, Lions Park, Fairview, and Lincoln schools.
Over the years, the Foundation has funded computers, iPads, ELMO projectors, Smartboards, musical instruments, art supplies, fitness equipment, and supplemental reading material - all to enrich our children’s educational experiences. We are currently in the Spring Grant Request Cycle.
