Mary's Mount Primary School

Term 3, Week 6 - 26 August 2022

'In the spirit of reconciliation, Mary’s Mount Primary School acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.'

Prayer for Confirmation Candidates

Lord,

You send out Your Spirit to touch the hearts of all people,

so that they may believe in You and in Jesus whom You sent.

Look kindly on all candidates for Confirmation as they listen to Your voice.

Open their hearts to Your Spirit and bring to fulfillment the good work

that You have begun in them.

As we prepare these children for Confirmation, make each of us an instrument of Your love.

Teach us to appreciate what is holy in others,

and to be patient with what we do not understand.

Deepen our faith in the Gospel and help us to pass it on by our example.

We pray that You will continue to guide us and sustain us.

Through Christ our Lord,

Amen.

Dear Parents and Carers

The JOY of Reading

One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the love of books. The Book Week assembly was a huge success, thanks to Mrs. Smith and the wonderful book-loving Mary’s Mount community. The staff of Mary’s Mount was led expertly by Mrs. Giancono and Mrs. Smith. Mr. Palmer was the star of the show with his fabulous acting prowess.

Mrs. Gamble and Mrs. Smith have been sharing the Book Council award shortlisted books with the children over the past few weeks. The children have been sharing with me which is their favourite and the enthusiasm for reading is heart-warming.

PERFORMING ARTS

Congratulations to the wonderful Year 2 and choir group representing Mary's Mount Primary School this week. Not only did they perform superbly on stage, but their behaviour was spectacular. Thank you to Mrs. Freeman and Mrs. Leech for preparing the students for this special event.

CONFIRMATION

The Very Reverend Father Peter Whitely, our Vicar General will be celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation for our students on Friday 26 August. We ask you to keep our Confirmation candidates in your prayers. We thank Mr Stephen Sorgiovanni for preparing the children to receive this Sacrament. Today I was fortunate enough to join the Year 6 group as they walked to the Holy Family Parish to practice for this special event.

I received an affirming email from a member of our school community this afternoon. It was wonderful to receive such an email affirming the behaviour of the children as they walked through Kalamunda. It really does lift your spirits to receive emails that show appreciation for our school community.

Maths Parent Evening – Tuesday 30 August, 6pm

Ben Saulsman, who is the Numeracy consultant from CEWA will be sharing with parents his insights on teaching maths at Mary’s Mount Primary School. Ben has been working alongside the teachers here at MMPS as we focus on creating a whole school approach to teaching maths. Ben is a fabulous presenter and I highly recommend you attend this session. Come along, share some refreshments and enjoy the fun and great information you will hear.

MATHS PARENT EVENING

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

This information session is all about how your child learns Mathematics in Primary School. Research confirms that communication and collaboration between school and home is a key determining factor in the success of your child at school.

Ben Saulsman from Catholic Education Western Australia will be explaining how we teach and assess Mathematics in school and then we will be playing a few mathematical games.

We would love to share these insights with you. Come and listen to the information, have a glass of wine and some cheese, and play a couple of fun games!

SOCIAL WORKER CORNER

Have you heard your child talking about interactions with their peers in the following ways?

  • She’s the worst friend EVER
  • He is ALWAYS saying or doing that
  • No one EVER lets me pick the game!

We can all tend to engage in what we call ‘all of nothing thinking’, which is when we focus on only the difficult or negative parts of a situation or relationship and ignore the positives, or the times that things went well. It is difficult for us as parents to know exactly what happens in social interactions for our children at school. But if you are hearing a lot of these ‘all or nothing’ statements from your child, it might be a clue that they need some help with reframing their ‘all or nothing’ thoughts.

In the Highway Hero’s program students are taught about managing their ‘Drama Llama’ thinking when it comes to their friendships. Students are taught to think about whether their reaction to the problem was proportionate to the situation, or whether perhaps their reaction was only focussed on the negative.

The authors of Highway Hero’s outline some ideas of how parents can help their children when they suspect that ‘Drama Llama’ thinking might be showing up

Monitor - your own response to situations. Are you prone to dramatic reactions or ‘all or nothing’ thinking yourself? Modelling calm behaviour and responses – that are proportionate to the situation- is doing a great deal towards helping your child to do the same.

Manage - your child’s heightened response to a situation. Talk about whether ‘Drama Llama’ thinking is showing up and model what a calmer, more helpful and less dramatic response would be. Help your child to practise moderating their response and noticing the positive parts of the interactions with their friends, not just focusing on what was challenging for them.

Teach - calming strategies. The Triple B’s- Breathing, Brain and Body remind your child to calm themselves before delivering their response. Breathing in 1-2-3 and breathing out 1-2-3. Get into some Supa Thinkin- “This is what I enjoyed today’. And then relax the body.

Emphasise - that how we think about something, makes a very big difference to whether we see it as a difficulty that can be solved or a problem that’s going to demolish us. Make this awareness a high priority in your household- and live by it yourself as an adult. Use difficulties that crop up in everyday life as an opportunity to give your children a window into the ways in which we can think about situations and respond to them in a helpful, measured way.
