Holy Week is a significant period in the Catholic calendar, which marks the last week of Jesus Christ's life on earth. It begins with Palm Sunday, when we remember Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem, and ends with Easter Sunday, when we celebrate his resurrection.
During Holy Week, we reflect on the love that Jesus showed for us through his sacrifice on the cross. This is a time for us to deepen our faith and renew our commitment to living a life in service of others.
The events of Holy Week are as follows:
Palm Sunday: Jesus enters Jerusalem and is greeted by crowds waving palm branches.
Holy Thursday: Jesus celebrates the Last Supper with his disciples, washes their feet, and institutes the sacrament of the Eucharist.
Good Friday: Jesus is crucified and dies on the cross.
Holy Saturday: Jesus' body lies in the tomb.
Easter Sunday: Jesus rises from the dead, conquering sin and death.
As a Catholic school, we will be observing Holy Week with our observance of Stations of the Cross on Wednesday morning. Our teachers will also be incorporating Holy Week themes into their lessons and activities.
I encourage all of our students and families to attend some of the Masses during Holy Week and take the time to reflect on the meaning of Holy Week. This is a chance for everyone to come together as a community and grow in our faith.

Our Catholic Faith Fact
What is the Chrism Mass? The Chrism Mass is an important event for the whole diocese. On Holy Thursday (in some dioceses it may be another day during Holy Week), the bishop, joined by the priests of the diocese, gathers at the Cathedral to celebrate the Chrism Mass. This Mass manifests the unity of the priests with their bishop. Here the bishop blesses three oils — the oil of catechumens (oleum catechumenorum or oleum sanctorum), the oil of the infirm (oleum infirmorum) and holy chrism (sacrum chrisma) — which will be used in the administration of the sacraments throughout the diocese for the year.

Attendance Dues Debt Recovery
Please be advised that at the May 2022 Cathedral Parish Finance Committee, the committee signed off on a new Attendance Dues Debt Recovery Policy. This enables the parish to engage an external debt recovery company (Under Control Collections). This will always be used as a last resort, when we have been unable to get a family to engage with us in relation to their outstanding Attendance Dues.
Any queries should be directed to Kirsten Tester – Attendance Dues Administrator - Ph (03) 595 1053 or ktester@cathedralparish.nz
