​Dear Thunderbird Families,


A special thanks to all of you that volunteer in our wonderful school. Thornhill would not be the same without you! Our staff did a special volunteer appreciation breakfast on Wednesday morning. Thanks to all of you that came. I want to give a very special thanks to our traffic volunteers: Martin, Stephen and Christa for keeping our drop off zone safe! Your daily commitment is beyond admirable.

Sally Bonini's Retirement Party!

After 30 years working at Thornhill Elementary and another 6 as a student, Sally is ready to let us fend for ourselves. We will miss you. Thank you for your unwaivering commitment to Thornhill Elementary School. Please join us for Sally's retirement party here in the Thornhill auditorium on Friday, June 1 from 6 - 9 pm.


The Retirement Committee would like to request donations to assist in achieving our goal of providing our beloved and dedicated Sally Bonini with a nice gift for her retirement. If you would like to support the committee you may send your contributions to Mrs. Vickie Carter, Sherry Katzel & Lisette Ruane in the school office. Please send all donations in by Wednesday, May 30. There will be an envelope in the office marked Retirement.

From The PFC Co-Presidents

Hi Thornhill Families,


Here we are with less than two weeks of the school year remaining - It’s gone by way too fast!


This marks the end of our two-year term as PFC Co-Presidents. We are grateful for the opportunity to work side by side with our principal, teachers, staff and of course the many dedicated board members and all of you awesome parents who we collaborated with in small and big ways. We were proud to work for and represent this wonderful school community! We also worked hard to bring more transparency on the board, especially with how we spend the money your families generously donate.


Many, many thanks to all that donated your time, talent and money to Thornhill!


We look forward to seeing you at Open House on Wednesday, May 30 from

6 -7 pm. Visit your child’s classroom to see all the great work they’ve done this school year.

Lost and Found - Tuesday, May 29

All lost and found items will be donated on Tuesday, May 29 at 2:30pm. This includes items left on the playground on Tuesday! The Lost and Found is located in the back of the multi-purpose room (MPR) by the bathrooms.


This year, we are donating the items to the East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation (EBALDC), a not-for-profit community development organization with over 40 years building healthy, safe, and vibrant neighborhoods in Oakland.


Lost items collected on May 30 through the end of the year will be donated on the last day of school, Thursday, June 7.

Anyone a fan of The Replacements out there? If you are, you certainly recognize those lyrics above from one of the "Mats" last great songs, "Talent Show." And as the school year is coming to a close, it's time for that annual event from which the next great superstar might emerge, the Thornhill Talent Show.


This year's show will take place on Monday, June 4 from 2 - 4 p.m. Students from all grades are welcome to participate, but we need an application form filled out and parent permission slip, first. Please go to the Office or Room 3 to get an application form. Turn it in to the Talent Show Box in the office, or to Room 3. Deadline for applications is Tuesday, May 29.

Read-A-Thon Update...

We are really in need of support for our $25,000 Thornhill Read-a-thon fundraising goal—‑We are at a mere $6,000! We only have 11% school participation. If we could have every family participate we can get to our goal in no time. The top participating classrooms are:


Holman- 32% class participation

Bridgman- 28% class participation

Forbes- 23% class participation

We only have a few weeks left. The Read-A-Thon ends on Friday, June 1. Here are some tips that will help us get to our goal:


● If you haven’t seen an email with your student’s Read-A-Thon page, there is still time. Contact Marie, our school librarian at foxmariec@gmail.com. Flyers will go out again on Tuesday!


● Once the page is ready, you simply send out emails to friends and family to let them know about our Read-A-Thon. There is also a link from the page to post on your Facebook account or other social media.


● If you’ve already posted on Facebook, repost! According to our highest earner, it’s been proven to get more sponsors for your student.


● Make sure your student’s sponsors know that we are promoting reading while we support the great programming at Thornhill. It’s a win-win!


● We also take cash or check donations. Your student can bring those into the office or to the librarian. 100% of those funds go to Thornhill!

Class of 2020 Book Club

And while we are on the subject of reading...


Is your child always reading, or just getting interested in reading?


Are you running out of ideas for new books to offer?


Come join other third graders as we share our favorite books and explore new age-appropriate releases. Or just come for some snacks and socializing! We will meet in the evenings once a month, and focus on exploring different interests and formats, from chapter books to graphic novels.

Konstella for Next Year

We are excited to announce that we will continue to use Konstella over the summer and through next year - and for many years to come! We hope that you have found it to be an efficient way to find all the information you need about your kids in one place. You can go directly to konstella.com or the Konstella app to see all the communications school-wide and within your classroom, as well as search for parent contact information.


Over the summer, we will be preparing for next year. What does this mean for you?


  • Your account and password information will stay exactly the same. There is no need to re-register.
  • If you are graduating from Thornhill, you will lose access to Konstella.
  • Sometime in the summer, we will dis-associate you from your classroom. This means you will lose access to EVERYTHING in your class, including photos, events, sign-ups, files, and messages. If you have photos you want to keep, please save them now.
  • We will use Konstella over the summer to share information as needed.
  • At the beginning of next year, we will assign your kid(s) to their new classroom(s).
  • The committees will continue (PFC, Dads Club, Auction Committee).

PFC Open Board Positions For 2018-2019 School Year

We are working hard to fill our open PFC board positions for next year and really would love YOUR help. We are looking for a well-rounded mix of parents/guardians to best represent all the parental interests here at Thornhill.


Please look over the open positions below and refer to our website for the full description of each position. Thank you in advance for your volunteer support!


Executive Positions - this position is a voting position and is very important to be filled. They are required to attend all PFC meetings (some exceptions can be made). We wish the Member-at-Large to be new to the board. This is a one-year position.


  • Member-at-Large (3-5)


Board Members - these positions are non-voting positions and are absolutely vital to the Thornhill community. They report to one of the executive positions.


  • 5th Grade Representative (must be 5th grade parent)
  • Auction Chair(s)
  • Hospitality Chair(s)
  • Parliamentarian
  • Popcorn Fundraiser
  • Recruitment/Membership
  • Site/Safety
  • Spring Carnival
  • TK/Kindergarten (We have 1 person and need 1 more, must be a returning parent with an incoming TK or K kid next fall)
  • Visual Arts
  • Walk-A-Thon
