Winter Weather Reminders
Now that it is getting colder, heavy coats, hats, mittens, boots and snow pants will become a daily necessity at school. PLEASE label your child's winter items. When they are dressing for recess, everything is spread out in the hallway and often gets mixed up with the belongings of others. If there is snow on the ground and they do not have the appropriate clothing here, they will not be allowed to leave the sidewalk when they're outside. As you can imagine, Kindergarteners are not fans of having to do this. ;) Also, please start working with your child on independently putting their winter gear on and zipping their own coats. They only get 15 minutes outside and if I have to zip up each student's coat and help them dress they will get very little time to play. Thank you in advance for your help!
Snow Day Packets
Snow Day packets will be coming home with your child very soon. These are to be completed on the first full day of school that is missed due to weather in lieu of making up the school day here. Any days missed after the first one will be added to our calendar. This is not to be done if there is a late start or early out, only if we miss a full day of school.
Daily 5/Reading
We are slowly getting more consistent with our leveled reading groups and the students seem to really enjoy them! Please practice reading and writing our sight words at home. I will send an updated list of words home each Friday in their binders.
This week's focus was on the letter Pp. We also identified color words in sentences and stories and did a fun "Frankencrayon" color word activity in the spirit of Halloween. We continue to read stories from different genres; the two we have focused on so far are informational texts (tell about real places, things, and people) and tales (fiction, often teach us a lesson like a fable does). Asking and answering questions as we read and identifying key details are two skills we have been working on so far this year.
Math
We finished up our patterning unit and are moving on to positional words such as above, below, on, off, top, middle, bottom, etc. Have some fun with this at home by hiding an objects and having your student find it and use positional words to tell you where they find it. Keep practicing identification of numbers 1-31 and counting out that many objects.
Science/Social Studies
Our "Living and Nonliving Things" chapter has come to a close and we have moved on to discussing "Everybody Works" in Social Studies. This week we talked about jobs and how people earn money to buy the things that they need.
