Professional Development Day
On February 17th, teachers and staff participated in a full day of Professional Development training. The focus of training was on instructional coaches and teachers collaborating towards completion of K-8 Science and Social Studies curriculum documents and targeting wrap up work for March 1st and Apr 5th early-release days. This type of professional development builds capacity in teachers to take ownership of the curriculum and more intentional lesson planning.
Department Chairs in grades 9-12 scheduled and coordinated the content for content area collaboration (Math, Science, ELA, Social Studies) as did Specials, SPED, ELL, and Foreign Language departments. Art and Music were afforded the opportunity to conduct "off site" Professional Development with each department head creating the agenda for the day. This included Art teachers developing lesson plans based on observations conducted at the Nelson-Atkins Museum and with K-12 music teachers observing in classrooms outside the district. The collaboration time for this opportunity to grow professionally was well received by teachers.
