WLWV School Board Briefs
April 2, 2018
The West Linn-Wilsonville School Board held a regular meeting on Monday, April 2. The following are select highlights from that meeting.
Board Names Pam Pearce 2017-18 West Linn-Wilsonville Volunteer of the Year
Board Passes Two Resolutions Around School Safety
The Board voted to approve Resolution 2017-10, with a few minor amendments, stating the WLWV School Board will appoint up to three advisory committees in the coming month. Those advisory committees will be tasked with looking into school safety, identifying areas of perceived strength and concern in the District’s 16 schools, determining if there are specific school issues or if they are district-wide, and prioritizing areas of perceived concern while identifying possible solutions for exploration.
The Advisory Committees will be Board-appointed and will report findings back to the School Board. The Resolution indicates that committees will be comprised of parents, students and teachers. Advisory committee members will be solicited through the Board, the West Linn-Wilsonville Education Association, West Linn-Wilsonville Education Foundation, parent-student-teacher organizations, and also student leadership organizations. Committees will form by the end of May, 2018, and will dissolve by April 30, 2019.
The Board also passed an amended Resolution 2017-11 related to school safety, which calls for the federal and state government to take action when it comes to protecting public school districts and their students.
District Presents Update on Health and Wellness Renewal Program
- Use research to reflect on and make recommendations for updating instructional practices, building on current practice and last year's introduction.
- Identify gaps and areas for revision of the curriculum based on current Oregon Health Standards.
- Take a leadership and facilitative role in identifying materials and resources that support updated instructional practices and teaching to the new standards.
- Communicate with colleagues and parents throughout the process by sharing information and participating in parent focus groups that bring forward and use parents' questions and ideas.
- Identify areas for professional learning.
The group has met several times throughout the year, in addition to parent focus group sessions to garner further input and feedback. The District invites parents from all schools to join the third community meeting to learn about our progress so far and contribute to our thinking and planning. Parents are invited to join us at the West Linn-Wilsonville District Office on Monday, May 14. During that meeting the District and Parent Focus Group will review materials, complete curriculum outlines, and plan for a larger Community Communication Session on Wednesday, May 30. Feedback from the Community Communication Session will then be considered before WLWV staff presents a Comprehensive Sexuality Education Plan to the School Board for approval in June.
Interested community members can read more about the current health and wellness program renewal progress on the District Website. To learn more about current health and wellness curriculum in the District, visit the Wellness webpageon the District Website.
West Linn Historical Society Shares Powerful Project in Partnership with West Linn High School
West Linn Historical Society Vice President Danny Schreiber informed the Board that West Linn High School Amplifier Newspapers dating back to 2011, as well as the year 1983, have been digitized and archived through the National Digital Newspaper Program. The project started last school year when the WLHS journalism program came to the Historical Society wanting to preserve the school's rich history through student voice. The Historical Society helped students raise $600, partnering with UO to digitize and archive student works.
Schreiber added that the Historical Society isn't done yet, as they would like to save as many Amplifiers as possible. The newspaper dates back to the school's opening in 1921, but records of the publication are nowhere to be found. If you have past copies of the Amplifier you would be willing to donate, please contact The West Linn Historical Society.
Board Awards Two Construction Contracts
The West Linn-Wilsonville School Board approved two construction contracts during the April 2 meeting. The Board awarded a contract amount of $447,282 to Lights There for lighting replacement in gyms and commons areas district-wide. The contract amount is less than the budgeted $500,000 for the project.
The Board also approved a second contract to Cedar Mill Construction Company for the renovation of Boeckman Creek Primary School, which will take place this summer. The project includes renovating the school’s entrance, providing a safe and secure entrance similar to Sunset Primary’s new entryway, as well as work to classroom porches. The contract amount of $1,280,800 was well under the budgeted amount of $1.6 million.
