Impacting the Community

Mrs. Lesoine's Access Points class at Fernandina Beach Middle School had a busy November. They started with a food drive, challenging the students at FBMS to help those in need in our community by donating food items. On November 19, the class went from room to room collecting and counting the food items. In all, they collected 950 cans/boxes of food that were donated to the Barnabas Center. In addition to the life skills of introducing themselves and counting, the students also learned the importance of caring for others in our community. For this, they each earned a certificate of citizenship. Next, the students designed invitations for Thanksgiving breakfast and gave them to their bus drivers. On November 23, the class thanked their bus drivers for being special by providing a breakfast of pancakes, eggs, and bacon. The students also worked on their writing skills by writing thank you notes to a person of their choice. The students had to write three reasons why they were thankful for that person. They then delivered the notes in person. And finally, the students built a turkey game, compliments of Lowe's Build It Yourself kits. They worked on following the directions and using tools as they built their games.

The students all read along with the presenter while reading Planet Zeee and the Money Tree. They then tested their new knowledge through a Jeopardy-style game and were able to keep the book!

Beta Club Donations

Mrs. Baker and the Yulee Middle School Beta Club collected donations from our students and YHS students to donate to hurricane victims in New Orleans, Louisiana. Mrs. Baker and her husband Heath transported the donations to New Orleans in a van donated by Mr. Baker's employee - Mercedes-Benz. They also had a generous local donor who paid for all of the transportation costs for the project.

Math Review

As a review of Math skills during Yulee Elementary's fourth-grade two days before Thanksgiving break, we had the students rotate through all five classrooms to experience hands-on challenges using their math skills. Room 1 had several STEM activities, such as building a turkey trap. Room 2 had a dinosaur digging through Place Value. Room 3 had Geometric games. Room 4 had Division Detectives looking for a suspect in a stolen burger. Room 5 had an operating room where students used Medical Multiplication to solve problems.
