Mrs. Blankenship's News You Can Use
Week of May 16, 2016
Please keep an eye on your child's breakfast/lunch account. Charges are no longer being extended.
Curriculum Update
ELA- The students will take their final ELA DA Monday. There is a reading and writing portion to this test. The students are well prepared, and they should do well if they give their best effort. The students’ autobiographies are due Monday. Their projects will be our “in class” reading, so quality work is expected. This is their keepsake from 5
th
grade, so your support in making sure that the project is well done is appreciated! We will also continue to work on cursive handwriting. In your child’s Friday Folder is a flyer detailing the Summer Book Fair. I would highly recommend taking advantage of this opportunity as the suggested summer reading list books from Northbrook will be available. There will not be a FrontRow reading or writing assignment next week. The standing assignment of reading and documenting 30 minutes each night continues. From Dr. Shaw:
Math- In math, we will review on Monday for Tuesday's DA. After that we will enjoy several hands on math activities to close out the year. There will also be a preview of some sixth grade math skills.
Social Studies-In social studies, we will continue to review content from earlier in the year to prep for the district assessment on Thursday. The students will also be presenting the research projects they've been working on for the past two weeks. There is one final daily grade on Tuesday, covering a review of government and economics.
Science-In science next week, we will continue reviewing science content for the district assessment on Wednesday. The students will present their research projects as well, if they chose a science topic.
Summer Book Fair!
The Jackson Media Center will host a Summer Reading Book Fair the week of May 16-20
to help ensure your child keeps reading this summer. For $20 your child will be able to select 5 books, 4 from the Summer Reading titles and one book from the “Fun” table. The average cost of one book is $5.99 - $7.99. All titles are for sale individually as well. We encourage parents to come in and help their child shop. We will stay open until 4:00 every day.
Fifth Fest Update....
Fifth Fest is THIS Friday, May 20, 2016! Please the following updates so that you are up to speed on how our day is planned!
If you are volunteering:
5th Grade Parent volunteers will be needed on campus by 8:15 AM and will check in at the front office. Otherwise, 5th Grade parents should plan on arriving for the 11:30 lunch or 12:45 Walk. Check in for the picnic and Walk will be located on the sidewalk outside of the cafeteria. Please do not go to the front office.
If you are attending the Picnic and/or the Fifth Grade Walk:
This year we continue the tradition in which parents of our 5th graders are invited to a picnic and an exciting 5th Grade Walk. The picnic and Walk are only open to 5th Grade parents (limit 2 parents per student). The event will involve 5th grade students’ parents lining the track as students take this meaningful walk to signify the end of the students’ elementary school years. The track will be decorated to show encouragement for the students as they prepare to leave Jackson. This activity will bring the 5th Grade Fest to a close. Our plan is for the picnic to begin at 11:30. The Walk should begin at 12:45. We wanted to give you ample time to include this memorable event on your schedule. Upon completion of the Walk, students will go to their Specials class. Due to safety and security, student check out will not be available after the Walk. All students will return to class and dismiss as usual. Parking will be limited, therefore, we request that you consider carpooling.
Check in for parents will be in the back parking lot. Plan for a wait as it is imperative that we check in all guests.
Super important information regarding the picnic:
For parents attending the picnic and desiring to eat with the students, you will be able go through the lunch line to pick up your lunch. It is extremely important that you have your EXACT CASH payment of $3.00 ready so as not to slow down the lines. Classes will eat at staggered times, so please check with your child’s teacher about the time. Please note that we will have close to 900 people involved in Fifth Fest! Plan accordingly if you plan on eating a school lunch. The more time in line, the less time you will have to eat with your child.
