2019-20 Welcome Back Newsletter: Dr. Sue
Hello TTSD families! We hope that you all have had a wonderful summer. The district has come to life with the hustle and bustle that comes with preparing for a new school year. Our teachers and administrators are engaged in planning for powerful academic experiences and impact; our building staff are readying their spaces, warming up the kitchens and making sure our grounds are beautiful; our technology department have devices ready for your students to bring home, and our district staff are managing our ongoing Bond construction and the important safety improvements to our buildings. We are excited and ready to welcome back our students next week.
This first newsletter of the year provides valuable information that will help you navigate the Back to School season. This includes information on the modified schedule for the first week of school; information specific to schedules for our individual schools; school supply lists; transportation and bus stop information; updates on all our Bond projects; and valuable resources offered by the district for your students and family such as the Family Resource Center, Caring Closet and by Safe Oregon. This is also an important reminder to make sure your schools have your most up-to-date contact information.
During the summer break, district leadership have participated in local and national opportunities to enhance the learning environment for our students. We have advocated for national support of education; convened with state representatives and education leaders, and dug in as a district to layout a school year dedicated to equitable outcomes for all students. We have also been deeply engaged in designing the Student Success Act community engagement process. This is an opportunity for parents, staff, community members and students to join us in helping guide where we will invest our allocation of the Statewide approved $2 billion in education funding. We will be sending information out in early September on how you can be a part of this process.
We have also continued to make critically important safety improvements to our buildings thanks to TTSD’s Bond measure that was generously approved by the voters back in 2016. You will find links to updates on all our construction projects here and many of you will see and experience these improvements as you take your students back to school.
Regarding our Bond projects, I am proud to announce the grand opening and renaming of Durham Education Center. We recently hosted the ribbon cutting to this beautiful new building that brings together individual programs including DEC, HUB and TTOA to one campus. Under the leadership of Principal Romas, students convened and proposed a new name to represent the creation of this new student community. We now host Creekside Community High School among our school site options and look forward to the important work accomplished in that beautiful, unique net zero building. Find more information here.
Also, Congratulations to Templeton Elementary School who will cut the ribbon on their new building at a grand opening celebration next week. In addition, Phase 1 of construction has been completed at Tigard High School with Phase 2 is underway. We anticipate full completion of this project next summer. Our enhancements to Tualatin High School are near completion with our eyes set on end of September to celebrate these new beautiful spaces.
I am humbled to work for you and a district community that proudly holds a reputation as a destination district, ranked currently at 15th in Best Places to Teach in Oregon and 13th in Top School Districts in Oregon. We are only as strong as our people, and our people are strong! From our boardroom to business office, operations, facilities and IT staff, to our schools’ secretaries, cooks, custodians, bus drivers, our new teachers and our seasoned veteran teachers, specialists and administrators, I can honestly say these are the most committed, compassionate, brilliant people I have had the privilege to work alongside.
While speaking about staff, please join me in welcoming new talent to our district. (New hires) We are honored they have chosen TTSD and excited to see the impact they will have on our learning environment as well as our staff.
I wish you all an exciting, stress-free and safe back to school. I look forward to seeing and meeting you along the way and if my office can ever be of assistance, please find our direct contact below.

2017-21 Redefining Learning Program Technology Plan
In 2016, Tigard-Tualatin voters approved Bond Measure No. 34-248 that included funds to expand access to technology for all Tigard-Tualatin School District (TTSD) students. The investment in the district’s “Redefining Learning” plan was dedicated to providing digital devices for all TTSD students by 2021. We are pleased to report that as we begin the 2019-20 school year, TTSD is ahead of schedule in providing 1:1 device for all students. The ongoing plan is to utilize the available technology tools and resources to transform lessons in ways that equitably engage students in real-world experiences provides opportunities for demonstrating knowledge and ultimately improves academic success through collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and communication.
1:1 technology:
What does that mean for you as parents of TTSD and the students we serve? With the ever-growing use of technology in our daily lives, both for work and home, we can imagine the many questions that you as a parent have with your child accessing a device at school and bringing it home.
What is the value of having a device in your child’s hand?
With the evolution of technology comes information at students’ fingertips, access to resources that are otherwise unavailable, safe and easy access to collaboration to improve understanding, and a multitude of ways for students to practice and show what they know.
How are teachers being supported in the intentional use of classroom technology?
Our teachers will be supported in designing and delivering instruction in a way that may be different from the way we learned as students. TTSD is committed to supporting teachers in transforming their instructional practices by providing access to an Instructional Technology Coach who is grounded in evidence-based teaching strategies as well as technology use. Through a differentiated and authentic support system, our teachers become more adept to designing and delivering their lessons in a way that is relevant and engaging for your children.
How does a school device look different than a personal device at home?
Use of personal devices often centers around free choice, connection with friends & watching Netflix/YouTube. In contrast, school use of devices is focused on intentional use to create a product and complete lessons, active engagement to challenge learning, and accessing content related to curriculum.
