CANNON CONNECTION
A newsletter for Cannon Elementary families - 2018-2019
WEEK OF MARCH 4, 2019
Hi Cannon Parents!
WE CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOU THIS WEEK AT FAMILY ENGINEERING NIGHT!
THURSDAY, 3/7 5:30-7:00 pm
Make plans to attend this important night, as your child takes the lead to guide you through a hands-on, interactive engineering design challenge! Check out the link below to see what fun engineering experiences await you and your family! This is a GREAT opportunity to experience STEM-based learning at it's best! Also, please stop by our Makerspace to see some incredible demonstrations by Cannon students. Finally, don't forget to stop by our spring Book Fair that will be open during this event! (Be sure to check out the information in this newsletter about how to purchase books from the Book Fair online or through a new feature called eWallet, so you can avoid long lines!)
As a reminder, since we still do not have a parking lot, our Cannon parents are asked to park on nearby residential streets, but please remember not to block any driveways! We know that this parking situation is not very convenient, but please don't let this discourage you from attending this special event with your child! It will be MORE than worth the walk - we promise! :)
Finally, there will be NO SCHOOL during the week of March 11th-15th. School will be closed for Spring Break. I hope that all of our Cannon families have a safe and enjoyable holiday break! We will look forward to welcoming all of our Cubs back to school on Monday, March 18th!
Proud to be your principal,
Mrs. Blizzard

NEWS FROM CANNON PTA
PTA QUICK PICKS!
Check out these "quick picks" of reminders & information from PTA:
SPRING FLING! Save the date for March 21st. Cannon PTA will be hosting a dinner and silent auction. We have lots of fun events planned and want you to join us. In-N-Out burgers will be available for purchase. Our silent auction will raise funds for a TinkerSpace at Cannon. What is a TinkerSpace? A TinkerSpace brings STEM learning outdoors. Students continue their learning with play during recess time with building, engineering, and STEM-focused outdoor play areas.
If you have a company or talent that you would like to offer, the silent auction committee is looking for donations from businesses and parents. Please contact Liz Chalmers at 2nd-VP@cannonpta.com for more information.

DISTRICT UPDATES
IN THE NEWS - MOMO CHALLENGE
GCISD Parents,
As you may have heard in the news, the “Momo Challenge” has been circulating through video and text form on social media and in other digital channels such as Snapchat and WhatsApp. Allegedly, Momo targets children by encouraging them to engage in self-harm. Although this appears to be more fear than fact, due to the concerns related to this challenge, we are sharing this information with you as you may want to talk with your child.
Our district has taken a proactive approach with our student devices. We have set the filters to block the search terms relating to Momo for students and will continue to update our filtering systems to be as proactive as possible. Even though we have alerts and monitoring processes in place, some students may attempt to use alternate language to find or access Momo. Additionally, this filter does not pertain to your student’s personal phones or devices on your home network.
We encourage you to talk with your student and discuss the importance of being a good digital citizen and alerting a trusted adult or teacher if inappropriate content is shared to their phone, iPad, laptop, or any other personal device. As always, we continue to encourage our students to “See Something, Say Something”. Our counselors would like to offer some tips for navigating these family discussions:
Ask a general question about whether your child has seen anything online that has made them upset or worried.
Explain that many things that happen online can be misleading or frightening. Some things are designed to gain attention.
Make sure your child knows that it is not ok to communicate with or follow directions from strangers online.
Additionally, here are some tools for families looking to parent in a digital age:
Creating a Family Media Plan (American Academy of Pediatrics)
Teaching Kids About Internet Safety (GCFLearnFree.org)
Talking with Kids About Being Online (Federal Trade Commission)
The safety of our students is a top priority and our counselors are always available. GCISD values your partnership in creating a positive culture for your student’s social-emotional and academic well-being.
