Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Students:
It’s hard to believe that we are fast approaching the end of the First Quarter! We’ve had a great quarter with GHS students pushing themselves academically, in athletic competition on the courts and the fields, and in concerts and performances.
As you know, our Class of 2017 is the 100th Graduating Class from Gilbert High School. It is an accomplishment the students are proud of, and we are so very proud of how seriously they take in representing our school and our community with pride.
We also had the amazing Homecoming several weeks ago and I am so very proud of our Student Council and their immense hard work in planning for those activities. The Spirit Week was fantastic and had high levels of student participation, the Carnival was very fun and well-attended, and the day of Homecoming GHS held its first-in-recent-memory parade! The Homecoming Parade was amazing, and we had great floats, lots of student groups and many families who came out to join in and watch. We had the Gilbert Fire Department participate with a fire truck, and kudos to members of the Gilbert Police Department for helping managing traffic on Elliot Road while the parade went around campus. We were blessed with the presence of our Grand Marshall, Mrs. Gerry Emmett, at 102 years young the oldest living GHS graduate!
Since then, our fall sports and programs have been in full swing. We have had awesome student attendance this year to events and it’s been great fun watching the school spirit of our students.
Finally, I want to take a moment to thank some groups on campus. Our students and especially the seniors have really done a great job this whole First Quarter being the leaders we expect them to be. I am amazed daily at the impressive teaching done by our faculty, and I appreciate our front office and support staff for always putting students and families first.
So many of our parents have routinely stepped up to help out in many ways across the campus, from helping PTRO with breakfasts for faculty and staff to being a chaperon on a field trip. As a fellow parent, I know how hard it is to raise kids in today’s world. I truly believe that it take a community to raise our young adults into the leaders that they can be.
Have a wonderful second quarter, everyone! Go Tigers!
Mr. Stroud
Principal

Family and Consumer Arts (FACS)
Take a look at this amazing testimonial about the value of Career/Technical Education (CTE) and the TOYBOX program from a former student Jordan Croft:
TOYBOX is the sole reason that I decided to be an Early Childhood Educator! TOYBOX prepared me for what I would do in college. I already knew how to write lesson plans, how to prep lessons, etc. TOYBOX prepared me in the sense of what to expect out of being a teacher. I always knew that I wanted to do something involving little kids, but TOYBOX showed me that being a teacher is hard work but it is so rewarding. I am so grateful for the TOYBOX Program at Gilbert High School and all of the teachers that were involved in making me the teacher that I am today! I am about to graduate from NAU in December with my BS in ECE (Bachelors of Science in Early Childhood Education. If it weren't for TOYBOX, I never would have realized my true potential as a teacher. I was pushed past my limits and it was hard and exhausting, but I know now that it was done because Mrs. Rowley, Mrs. Zapata, and Mrs. Olsen knew that I could be and do better and be more than I could have ever imagined! TOYBOX was my final decision maker about my my career focus. I will forever be grateful to TOYBOX and all of the teachers that knew I could do great things and who helped me get to where I am today.
I received Dual Enrollment credit by taking TOYBOX, which gave me a jump start towards my college degree.
So here I am, student teaching at Mesquite Elementary this semester. My first 8 week placement is in an integrated preschool classroom. About 75% of our students are on an IEP. My next 8 weeks will be in a kindergarten classroom right down the hall.
Another fun side note is that one of our current TOYBOX preschoolers, Bella Oldfield, is in Jordan's placement classroom at Mesquite Elementary a few hours of the week! TOYBOX positively impacts the community from the preschoolers to high school students and all the families it serves.

Visual Arts
The Visual Arts Department at Gilbert High School has been busily preparing for several exciting events that will take place throughout the year. Photo Club and Metals Club both participated in the Homecoming Carnival: Photo Club with a Polaroid Photo Booth and Metals Club sold temporary tattoos and student made jewelry. The Carnival was the busiest it has been in many years and was a great time thanks to Student Council.
Visual Arts is currently planning a field trip to the Art One Gallery in Scottsdale on October 25th. This trip coincides with an in-house field trip on October 28th that will allow students to collaborate and create/curate a show for Art One Gallery. Students will show their work in December. Art shows by student artists are very rare in Gallery Row in Scottsdale. We are proud to partner with Kraig Foote and the Art One Gallery.
Students will have the opportunity to participate in the Shemer New Horizons Show in January of 2017. Invited schools may submit two student works to compete against other competitive Phoenix area visual arts programs.

Library
Libraries today are less about what they have for people and more about what they do for and with people. Library professionals promote opportunities for individuals and progress for communities.
Certified school librarians play an essential part in ensuring that students have 21st- century information literacy skills. Librarians establish meaningful partnerships with administrators, create opportunities for digital learning, and make sure that professional standard and guidelines are followed. School libraries transform learning to ensure that every student succeeds by:
* teaching information literacy information;
“The internet makes doing research easier –
easier to do well and easier to do poorly.”
* providing digital literacy instruction;
* maintaining a lifelong love of reading and learning;
* providing personalized instruction through individual reference exchanges;
Increasing amounts of information demand students acquire the skills to select, evaluate, and use information appropriately and effectively.”
* collaborations with teachers to identify resources and to integrate technology.
School libraries provide equitable physical and intellectual access to resources and tools required for learning in warm, stimulating, and safe environment.

Health Office News
This school year is moving right along! Here are a few things we would like you to be aware of:
Screenings for Vision and Hearing have started for this school year. If you have received a letter regarding your student’s hearing or vision, please let the Health Office know when it is resolved. We can then remove them from the “follow-up” list.
Does your student need to use crutches at school? If so, District Policy requires a doctor’s note be supplied to the Health Office. This also applies to the use of wheelchairs, canes, and knee walkers. All equipment must be supplied by the parent/guardian.
All medications need to be brought to the Health Office by a parent or responsible adult and signed in with the nurse. The medication needs to be in the original container or current prescription bottle. Narcotic pain medication will not be accepted or administered in the school setting. Students are not allowed to take narcotic pain medication and come to school. If this type of pain medication is needed, the student should stay at home. Inhalers and Epi-Pens can be carried by the student, but the parent will need to sign a consent form annually.
Please notify the Health Office when your student has a health related issue. Recent hospitalizations, surgeries, or injuries requiring limited activity are some examples of these issues. A physician clearance to return to school is needed after surgeries, hospitalizations, or lengthy illnesses.
We hope you have a safe and healthy fall break!
