Parent Teacher Conferences
The evening of Wednesday, October 9 and the afternoon and evening of October 10 have been set as parent-teacher conferences. The time slot for each conference has been set at 15 minutes which is not a lot of time. With a little preparation and planning, you can make the most of the 15 minutes.
Look over your child’s schoolwork - What do you notice? Are there questions popping into your mind?
Talk with your child - What is most enjoyable about school? Least enjoyable? Ask your child if there is anything they would like you to talk with the teacher about.
Make a list of questions - Being that there are only 15 minutes, prioritize your questions. List them in order of importance.
Arrive a few minutes early - It is best to arrive a few minutes prior to conference time. When it is your conference time, knock on the classroom door to let the teacher know you are there and ready for your conference..
Ask the most important questions first - Remember there are 15 minutes, cover your most important questions and/or concerns first.
Figure out the next steps - Depending on what you discuss, establish the next steps - staying in touch, extra support, next check in, etc. .
After the conference, check in with your child - Talk with your child about what was discussed in the conference. It is important to share the positives but it is also important not to shy away from any concerns or challenges.
If needed, follow up with the teacher - If there is an agreement on next steps, follow up with the teacher to see how things are progressing.
Treats with Terriers
Please join us on Thursday morning October 17 at 7:50 AM for our annual Treats with Terriers.
November Millage
Two ballot proposals are on the November 5th ballot. The first millage proposal is an Operating Millage Restoration and Extension (a homestead and non-homestead operating millage) that was first approved by voters in 1995. It has two components:
the homestead millage (7.8763 mills) that is levied on primary residences and allows the school district to receive its full funding allowance from the State of Michigan; and,
the non-homestead millage (18 mills) is levied primarily on rental properties and businesses. The State of Michigan requires school districts to levy this millage to insure full State Aid funding. Nineteen (19) mills is requested so that with Headlee rollbacks of up to one mill, the full 18 mills can be levied.
The second millage proposal is a one mill sinking fund proposal that was first approved by voters in 2004. This millage expired with the 2019 levy. Voter approval of this proposal will extend the term and expand the purpose of the sinking fund and restore the authorization to one mill after a Headlee rollback. Voter approval of this proposal will extend and restore the sinking fund and allows the school district to use sinking fund proceeds for expanded purposes, including security and technology equipment.
These two proposals combined make up 25% of the GPPSS Budget.

Box Tops for Education
A couple of reminders for this school year:
Don't forget - we continue to collect box tops all school year long!
If your child turns in a sheet full of 25 they can pick a prize out of the treasure chest! Sheets are available in the office.
Did you know? Box Tops has gone mobile! While legacy box tops are still out there, new items will not have physical tops to cut. All you have to do is download the app from the link below and scan your receipt from the grocery store - easy as that! But keep those tops coming so long as you still have them! https://www.boxtops4education.com
Any questions, please contact Kimberly Nyenhuis or Charlene Williams.
