Hello SMS Families,


Welcome to our first monthly newsletter. These newsletters will provide you with all the happenings at South Mountain Elementary School and Annex. It will showcase our students, teachers, PTA and parent involvement in our daily lives at South Mountain Elementary School. Enjoy.

The First Annual South Mountain Scripps Spelling Bee

We would like to congratulate the winner of the South Mountain Spelling Bee, Bray Brown and the runner-up Nate Kraemer. Congratulations also goes to all the students that participated in the classroom spelling bees, the teachers for all their hard work and Ms. Zeigler for organizing the event.

World Fest at SMS

On Friday January 31, 2020 South Mountain Elementary celebrated its Second Annual World Fest event. There was food from various countries in the Gymnasium, dancers and performers in the Auditorium and arts and crafts in the Cafeteria. Mr. Mason would like to thank the PTA, teachers and students for all the work and time that they put in to make this event a success.

SMS GOES GAGA for the GaGa Pits

GAGA PITS

SMS students would like to thank Mr. K., Mr. Tait and the SMS PTA for our three new GaGa Pits. Our P.E. teachers have reviewed the rules of the game and our students are truly enjoying the game during recess. There may have been a sighting of Mr. Mason playing GaGa.

Global School Play Day

On Wednesday February 5th South Mountain Elementary School students participated in Global School Play Day. Students rotated through several stations/classrooms and were able to take part in various activities throughout the day. SMS Administration would like to thank Ms. Mazzerella, Ms. Masters, Ms. Juhlin, all the other teachers at the Big School and Annex and all the PTA volunteers for making this event a success.

4th Grade Team

Fourth grade clubs are focusing on promoting citizenship through mentoring, debating, lending a helping hand and celebrating diversity. #wecanmakeaworldofdifference #wearethechange

Clubs Meet Every Wednesday Morning from 8:10-8:40


Helping Hands—Conduct school wide drives including Thanksgiving drives and prepare care packages

Kindness Club— mentors/works with younger grades and thinks of ways to spread kindness around the school

Debate Club—focuses on forming opinions and substantiating arguments

Global Citizens—celebrate diversity, research cultures around the world

Roller Skating Party

Thanks to the SMS PTA for sponsoring our yearly Roller Skating Party at the Florham Park Roller Skating Rink. We had many students, parents and even Mr. Mason showing their skating skills.

Black History Month in 1-Dorton/Roig

First graders in Dorton/Roig learned about the following famous African-Americans: Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson, Ruby Bridges, and George Washington Carver.

South Mountain School Celebrates the 100th Day of School

Team W kindergarten celebrated the 100th Day of School on Tuesday, February 18th. Our Superstars created special shirts complete with 100 fingerprints! We made Shrinky Dink medallion necklaces, completed 100 exercises, read Jakes' 100th Day of School, along with other crafts and counting activities. Our students brought in their 100th Day projects which we displayed around our room.

Mrs. Schaefer-Gelo's Class Celebrates the 100th Day of School

Mrs. Schaefer-Gelo's class visited South Mountain School's office, Ms. Sabato's classroom and Team W for the 100th Day of School.

Third Grade Celebrates Black History Month With Tracey Morgan-Diaz

During Black History month, our third graders had a special speaker. Tracy Morgan-Diaz came to South Mountain to speak about the life of her grandfather, Garrett Morgan. Garrett Morgan was an African American inventor who invented several items such as the gas mask and traffic light. Tracey Morgan-Diaz is a close family friend to one of our third grade teachers, Mrs. Wilson.

Forces and Motion Science Unit in 3-Manikad/Mazzarella

To wrap up our Forces and Motion science unit, the students in 3-Manikad/Mazzarella designed a marble drop that needed to be longer than 6 feet and include a loop. Students tested and revised their models; all were successful!
