Summary of the November 5, 2020 School Board Meeting

The School Board adopted its FY 2022 Budget Direction during its Nov. 5 meeting. The School Board is committed to providing a high-quality education to its students and their aim with this budget direction is to ensure APS financially supports its mission in the FY 2022 budget. Superintendent Recommends Elementary School Boundary Changes

The Superintendent’s recommendation for elementary school boundaries to take effect in 2021-22 was presented at the Nov. 5 School Board meeting. It includes ASFS, Ashlawn, McKinley, Taylor, and Tuckahoe, addresses attendance zones for schools at the Key and Reed sites, and places ASFS within its boundaries. APS will hold a countywide elementary school boundary process in 2022.

The School Board will hold a Public Hearing on Dec.1 at 7:30 PM, and will adopt new boundaries at the Dec. 3 School Board Meeting.

Thank You, Arlington Voters!

Arlington Public Schools thanks voters for supporting the 2020 School Bond on Nov. 3. Nearly 80% of Arlington voters approved the $52.65 million school bond measure that will be dedicated to improving school infrastructure and addressing continued enrollment growth.

Thank you to the 2020 School Bond Co-Chairs Lois Koontz and Miles Mason for leading this initiative and for increasing community support of the school bonds.

School Board Policies Available for Public Comment

Arlington Public Schools is soliciting comments on the draft revision to the following policy.

    Feedback should be provided through the APS Engage online feedback form. Please be sure to include the policy you are referencing in your correspondence. Or by submitting the corresponding policy questionnaire at under the Public Comment on Drafts section. The policy noted above is available for public comment from Nov. 1-Dec. 9.

    Advisory Committees that have opted into the Enhanced Feedback process for these policies may also submit a supplementary memo in addition to responding to the survey. The survey response should note that you have submitted a supplementary memo. The Supplementary memo is due the day the survey closes.

    The School Board is accepting applications for the Advisory Council on Teaching and Learning (Formerly Advisory Council on Instruction) and Budget Advisory Council (BAC)

    The Arlington School Board values input from parents and members of the community as part of the APS decision-making process. That’s why the school system has established a network of volunteer advisory committees, each one focusing on a specific subject or topic area from instruction to construction.

    The School Board is accepting applications for the Advisory Council on Teaching and Learning (Formerly Advisory Council on Instruction) and Budget Advisory Council (BAC).

    Information about all advisory groups and applications for the groups can be found on the APS website.

    School Board Open Office Hours

    As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person Open Office Hours are suspended and will be held virtually. Information on how to sign up for upcoming Open Office Hours will be communicated through the normal APS channels the Friday before the scheduled Open Office Hours.
