Second Steps
Today’s Second Step lessons were about handling strong feelings, particularly: handling waiting, handling put-downs, and managing anger.
Key parts of today’s lesson are:
• You can use steps to calm down when you feel excited or impatient about waiting.
• It’s important to calm down angry feelings so you don’t do something hurtful.
• Calming down helps you handle put-downs and avoid making conflicts escalate.
Families can support this at home by looking for opportunities to model and practice the Calm Down steps: First, tell yourself to stop and name the feeling. Then, use belly breathing (push your belly out when you breathe in), counting, or positive self-talk. You can demonstrate assertive responses to put-downs, and you can model assertive communication skills to get what you want or need.
TIGER TUESDAY WINNERS
Unit Notes
Unit A
We are so proud of how hard students have worked this week on iReady. If needed, we will finish testing next week depending on individual student pace. Thank you for your support during our testing window!
Unit B
First year Unit B students have been working with coins. Please have your child practice making change with combinations of coins. Second year Unit B students have been working on multiplication facts. Please work on these facts at home. Thanks!
Unit C
As part of the 100-year anniversary celebration of Ridgeway, Unit C is going to be doing some research as well as interviewing Ridgeway alums as recent as high school and as far back as we can find. If you have any historical documents, if you are a Ridgeway alum, or if you know a Ridgeway alum, please contact Maria Cox at mcox@cpsk12.org
Specialist News
I am excited to announce that the author of The Secret School, Avi, is going to do a virtual visit with our students next week! After the Ridgeway One Read in the fall, I mailed Avi the letters students had written along with a description of the program and some photos of families reading his book together. After receiving our mail, Avi reached out to us and offered to meet. He even wrote about his upcoming virtual visit with us in his blog: https://avi-writer.com/blog/2022/12/one-school-one-book/
Avi has written over 80 books, many of which are award winners. Having the opportunity to hear from such a well-known and respected author is a very exciting opportunity. Thank you Avi!
Avi also mentioned that the sequel to The Secret School is coming out this year. It’s called The Secret Sisters. Be sure to put this title on your family summer reading list!

For the Health Room
A message from the health room
The health room keeps student clothes on hand in case of spills or accidents. We would appreciate any donations of size 10-12 stretchy or yoga type pants. Gender neutral styles are most welcome!
