September Newsletter

Garner ISD

Welcome Back to School!

Things are already in full swing @ Garner, and we are thrilled to begin this year's journey with you and your children. We hope this monthly newsletter will be a useful tool to keep you informed of the wonderful things happening around our school. Feel free to share this with your friends & family, and let us know if there's something you'd like to see included in future editions. One of this year's priorities is providing opportunities for YOU to be involved in all we do. We are looking forward to a fabulous year together!

Calling All Garner Historians!

Do you have information, memorabilia, or stories to share about the history of our community? The Junior High GT students are working on a HUGE project to discover and document Garner's past. If you anything to contribute or would like to meet with one of our reporters, please contact cbeynon@garnerisd.net. We look forward to hearing from you!

P.T.O. wants Y.O.U.

Garner PTO is thrilled to kick off a brand new year, and we are focused 100% on supporting our teachers, students, and school in order to help everyone achieve success. Whatever your level of availability and commitment, there is a way for you to get involved. This month we are launching our 100% profit, BUY NOTHING fundraiser to purchase a portable stage lighting system for our gym. Together with our new sound system, this will allow us to fully enjoy your children's performances and special events. Also, please join us Tuesday, Sept 8 for a special Fall Festival planning meeting and again at our regular meeting on the last Tuesday of each month (9/28). For more information, check out our bulletin board in the main entrance or contact hpontremoli@garnerisd.net. Thank you for your support!

Tech Tools to Help You @ Home

Need some additional support to help your child with their studies? Here are some sites which might just do the trick:

Khan Academy - free videos, lessons, and tracking of your student's progress for grades K-12 Math.

Starfall - free Reading, Vocabulary, and Spelling activities for PK-2nd grade

Booktrack - free interactive books with accompanying soundtracks; There are a few children selections, but these are primarily for Junior High and up. Many of our JH students produced their own stories last year on this site. It's super cool! There is a smart phone app available as well.

Mr. Nussbaum - (Mrs. Shaw's favorite) free games for grades K-6, all subject areas. Parents, try your hand at Torture the Teacher. It's a fan favorite of the students. :)

If you have other links that your family loves, please share them with dshaw@garnerisd.net, and we can feature them in future editions!

Fall Festival is October 10!

Start getting your costumes together and making plans to join us for our annual Fall Festival on Saturday October 10. If you have any donations for raffle items, contact hgreenwood@garnerisd.net. Parents will be working activity booths, so be looking for signup information from your child's teacher. This event is a wonderful Garner tradition, and we are counting on this year's festival to be our biggest and best yet!
