Roberts Middle School
Aviator Agenda: March 21-25
HOW TO CULTIVATE A WINNING MINDSET
March Madness began this week. Sixty-eight teams began the tournament with their eyes on the national championship. In 1974, Digger Phelps, the Notre Dame basketball coach, was preparing his team to meet the perennial national champion UCLA Bruins in a basketball game. UCLA was on an 88 game winning streak and was the powerhouse in college basketball. Coach Phelps knew that in order to beat the Bruins and their legendary coach, John Wooden, he had to change the mindset of his team.
He utilized an unusual strategy to get his team ready for the game. On Monday after a strenuous practice, he had his team go to the ends of the courts and cut down the nets. The ritual of cutting down the nets is bestowed upon the winning team after winning a championship or after a major upset. Coach Phelps repeated that action on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. By Friday, the nets were brought down with true professionalism. Saturday afternoon, when the game was over and UCLA had gone down in defeat, the Notre Dame players cut down the nets with even more passion. They had accomplished their objective.
At Roberts, many of our students face so many of life’s challenges. Many of our students never had the opportunity to experience what winning feels like. As teachers, we have that daunting task of preparing our students not just academically, but helping them cultivate a growth mindset. We can never give up on a child; our students deserve the best education possible. This last week before the STAAR test for 5th grade, let's build their confidence and build on their successes. Let us teach them how to expect to win.

FOCUSED WALKTHROUGHS: SMALL GROUP INSTRUCTION
- It starts with us, the teacher led group in the blended model. We need to make sure that we are increasing the rigor of instruction in our small group.
What does increasing rigor look like.
- This means providing our students more of a challenging and meaningful learning environment. We want to create a small group environment where students are thinking critically and actively employing problem solving skills. We need to allow our students the opportunity to struggle in their learning.
How do you support this necessary struggle to take your student further than ever?
- This can only happen if we preplan our questions. At times, we let our students off the hook by supplying the answer too quickly. One of the tools we can implement within our small groups is to check for understanding. Understanding is best gauged through a written answer. Written responses give teachers an objective framework for understanding when to move on and when to reteach.
What will we be looking for:
- Give students the opportunity to struggle
- Preplan questions and sentence stems
- Check for understanding through writing
