WBMS Friday Notes
April 16-20
Reflections from Ms. Perkins
WBMS Parents and Guardians –
I am happy to report that our first two Georgia Milestones tests went smoothly and our students reported they felt confident overall. Next week our eighth graders will continue testing in the areas of science and social studies, so please make sure their Surface Devices are fully charged and our students are well rested.
I hope you and your family will join us tonight for our first ever Wacky Webb Day event. Along with many other staff members, I am gearing up to sing karaoke, get pied in the face, and soaked in the dunking tank. 😊Our wonderful PTA has planned a fun-filled night with games, food, and entertainment for the whole family. I hope many parents will join in the excitement and sing and play some games with our students. It sounds like a great way begin the weekend! No matter what you and your family have planned for the weekend, I hope you fully enjoy your time together. All the best!
In collaboration,
Rebecca Williams Perkins
Principal, Webb Bridge Middle School

CONGRATULATIONS TO JAKE SNOW, OUR GEORGIA LAWS OF LIFE ESSAY CONTEST WINNER
Each year, all students taking 9th grade Literature and Composition participate in the Georgia Laws of Life Essay Contest. Each 9th grade lit teacher submits a winner of each of their classes. The votes are in, and although no Raiders were selected this year as one of the seven state contest winners, the Rotary Club has chosen the following AHS (and WBMS) students for recognition at the school level:
- AHS Winner is 9th Grader Dennis Green for his essay, “The Trip to a New World” (teacher Ms. Ginny Brown).
- Recognized for Honorable Mention are Michael Victor Cardozo for his essay, “Gone, Not Forgotten” (teacher Ms. Ginny Brown) and 8th grader Jake Snow for his essay, “Hope” (teacher Ms. Nicole McNeal)
Please join us in congratulating our winners, and all their teachers for this outstanding achievement in a very worthwhile competition!
Yes I Can! Award for Webb Bridge Middle School goes to 8th grader, Adithya Akula. Congratulations!!
The Yes I Can! Award celebration is a district wide reception to honor one (1) student from each school who has excelled in one (or more) areas (e.g. academics, athletics, social skills, vocational skills). The event is sponsored by the Fulton Foundation and is a great way to celebrate our year. This year, Adithya has made outstanding progress both academically and socially. He is a talented member of our school band, excels at playing the trombone, and participates in Pathways and Goldfish Club.
Attention 8th Grade Parents!
Plans are underway by our wonderful PTA for the annual 8th grade dance. This year’s event will take place on Friday, May 11, from 7:00-10:00 PM. Dance tickets will cost $20.00 and will include hors d'oeuvres, snacks, dessert, beverages, a DJ, prizes and more.
Here are some important upcoming dates:
April 11th – Dance invitations and permission slips with dance details will be distributed to students in homeroom.
April 19th and 25th – Tickets will only be sold on these dates through social studies classes. Students will need to have a signed permission slip to buy a ticket.
There will also be an online option to buy tickets. Instructions for online purchasing will be included with the permission slip going home on April 11th. If a ticket is purchased online, the student will still need to turn in a signed permission slip to the homeroom teacher.
In addition, gift card donations are needed as prizes to be awarded by our DJ during the dance. If you care to donate a gift card, please bring it to the front office labeled PTA/Dance. Thank you for your support!
Attention Eighth Grade Parents
Eighth grade students received the 3rd/final course verification forms yesterday during homeroom. Please verify the courses on the form and be sure to make any changes if needed. If there are changes, the form should be returned directly to Alpharetta High School by June 8th. If your child has signed up for a virtual course for this summer, the course does not need to be listed on the verification form. Virtual courses should only be listed on the verification form for fall courses taken at Alpharetta High School.
Relay for Life- May 12th
Join our team and help support our Relay
In preparation for this year’s Relay for Life event on May 12th at WBMS, the school’s FBLA chapter is conducting a community service project. Members of the organization will be preparing luminaria bags to be displayed during the May 12th Relay for Life. To place an order for a luminaria, download the order form (see below). You can either mail it to the address below, or have your student bring it to school and give it to Dr. Oravetz in Room 120.
Luminaria bags are $10 each. Checks are to be made payable to the American Cancer Society. We hope you will take the opportunity to dedicate a bag to someone you know who has loss their battle with cancer, or to honor someone still fighting or has beaten the disease, or acknowledge and thank one of the many caregivers to cancer patients. If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Oravetz at oravetz@fultonschools.org.

8th Grade Parents
Smarties (candy) Alert!
The school is aware of a trend that is currently hitting some of our students, and we want our parents to be aware, also. Children and teens are grinding the Smarties into a powder and then making a line with the powder, similar to the way cocaine users line up their drugs. The kids then snort the Smarties into their noses. While the Smarties do not contain any addicting ingredients and the kids are not actually getting high, the phenomena seems to be popular. Doctors warn that the side effects of snorting Smarties can include lung infections, nose-wedged maggots, bleeding and nasal passage scarring, allergic reactions and smoker's cough. Please talk with your child about this dangerous behavior and do not buy your child Smarties.

Keeping Our Children Safe: Parenting Class
As parents, we want nothing more than to protect our children. So just thinking about child sexual abuse can be scary. However, this type of abuse is very common in our communities.
Parents, you are invited to an informative class in English (with interpreters in Spanish, Korean and Chinese) that will provide you with new knowledge and tools to protect your children! The Stewards of Children program will teach you how to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse.
Through a DVD presentation, you will hear from survivors of abuse and professionals, all sharing practical guidance for protecting your children. Each participant will receive a workbook (your personal prevention plan) and participate in a group discussion.
