The wintertime bass bite at San Clemente is anything but leisurely, but it could be your best opportunity of the year to catch the <Calico Bass Fishing Tips of a lifetime.
While Lilis was understandably reluctant to offer up some of his secret spots, he was more than happy to clarify the nuts and bolts of fishing for huge Calico Bass Fishing at San Clemente Island. "Weather and naval closures are the two most critical variables to consider when planning a trip to the island," Lilis said. "San Clemente is about a 60-mile run from Long Beach, so if the wind starts to blow when you're out there it will probably make for a very long and wet ride home. Usually check the weather forecast for the entire day before venturing out as well as recall that simply since it is calm on the beach does not mean that it's not going to-be rough and windy offshore."
Should you be planning on making the run in a centre console, like Lilis does, it's better to try and schedule your excursions on days forecasted for 10 knots or less of wind and in seas that have an interval of at least twice the swell height. When there is a big swell you can go out, you just do not need to-do it the moment the big swells are absolutely close together.
San Clemente Island is subject to closures and home to a naval base, therefore it is important to check the position of the area of the island you intend to fish before making the long term. Island closures can be viewed at www.bdoutdoors.com.
"A large amount of times, the areas of the island that are shown as red are simply closed for part of the day." Lilis clarified, "If you select the red areas of the map, it will show you the times during which each area is closed."
Regarding fishing techniques, Lilis says the conditions dictate his strategy. "The fish bite differently in the early hours, or on an overcast day than they do after the sun is out. You can catch fish in the same locations, but you have to change up your tactic," he said. "At this time of yr, we invest a whole lot of time fishing kelp beds to the backside of the island in 20 to 40 feet of water. Within the morning, or when it is cloudy, the fish seem to stay deeper in the column, so I will normally throw a swimbait on a heavier head and let it sink for the bottom before winding it back at a reasonable speed."
