Principals' Post
It's that time of year - the “spring forward” time change occurs on Sunday, March 10th. I read an article recently that discussed strategies for helping your child prepare for the hour of sleep that they will "lose" this weekend.
Work to prepare your child for the upcoming time change by developing a a gradual plan. By adjusting your bed time and wake up time by just 15 minutes each day, you can help your child adjust gradually. If your regular bed time for tonight would be 8:00pm, tuck your child in a little earlier for bed at 7:45pm. Set their alarm 15 minutes earlier for Friday morning and you are well on your way to helping them adjust to the upcoming time change!
In general, here are some tips to help people of all ages get better sleep:
- Remove phones, tablets and TVs from the bedroom.
- Don’t exercise right before bed.
- Don’t consume caffeine eight hours before bedtime.
- Don’t eat a heavy meal before going to bed.
- Keep the room dark and cool.
- Try to keep a consistent sleep and wake schedule.
- Prepare your body for bedtime with relaxing activities.
- Get some natural sunlight - it helps regulate your body's internal clock.
We look forward to seeing all of our WELL RESTED Panthers on Monday morning. Don't forget to set your clocks AHEAD ONE HOUR on Sunday!

Illinois Assessment of Readiness for 3rd-5th Grade Students
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Our students take federally required assessments every spring. These assessments help us understand how our students are growing academically, compared to their peers across the state. The state uses this information to provide more support and resources to the schools in the greatest need. This year, the English language arts and math assessment for grades 3-8 is called the Illinois Assessment of Readiness.
The Illinois Assessment of Readiness is almost exactly the same this year as the assessment that students took last year, only slightly shorter. The Illinois Assessment of Readiness measures the same Illinois Learning Standards and includes the same high-quality test questions that teachers and students have become familiar with over the past four years.
Our students should feel confident showing what they know and can do on the Illinois Assessment of Readiness, even with the new test name and new look.
The Illinois Assessment of Readiness will change over the next few years, as the state works to make it more useful to schools and families. Next year, we will have the results back from the test much more quickly. The year after that, the test will adapt to each student, so we gain a better understanding of where each individual student is in their learning. We will continue to be able to measure students’ growth from year to year throughout these improvements.
Our students will take the Illinois Assessment of Readiness between the dates of April 8th – April 26th. Mints will be provided to students during testing, as studies have shown that doing so can increase alertness and reduce stress. If this presents an issue, please contact your student’s school to discuss further.
As always, we encourage our students to do their best every day. Thank you for your partnership in your student’s academic success.
Sincerely,
Melissa Murphy
