HERMAN E. DUMMER NEWSLETTER
FEBRUARY, 2022
A MESSAGE FROM MRS. FORD
Well, we have made it to another month. As with everything else, the weather has also been unpredictable and has thrown us for a loop! BRRRRRRR…With that being said, I see so much resilience, capability, and growth within our staff and students even when we never dreamed we could accomplish what we have with what has been thrown our way. Thanks to you, the hard work of our staff, and the students, we are growing and moving forward. The end of the year is quickly approaching and we will continue to push our students to do the best they can while supplying the support they need. I am sure we all wish we could be like Punxsutawney Phil and pop our head out to see what to expect coming our way and then pop back down in our hole to forget about the future, but we all know even though things are hard, we are a resilient bunch. We will not hide, but instead we will succeed, because by working together, come sun or shadows, we are unstoppable!
Drop-Off and Pick-Up Reminder
It is imperative that when you drop off or pick up your student(s) that you do so ONLY in the designated areas. People are parking in NO PARKING areas where there are “No Parking” signs, cones, and in the crosswalk. When students are crossing the street, it is very dangerous because the cars cannot see around the other vehicles and buses are not able to get through. We are also having many vehicles not stop when pedestrians are at the crosswalk. We have been very fortunate that an accident has not happened and we want our students and their families to be safe. There are two crossing guards. One is in front of the middle school and the other is on the corner of Wells and Hall Streets. If your student(s) needs to cross the street for some reason, we recommend using one of these crossing guards since Dummer does not have one in front of our school. We are constantly reminding our students to always assume that vehicles will not stop and to be sure to look both ways. They have done a remarkable job with this, but it should not only be up to them. Please use your turn signal and pull up, drop your student(s) off quickly, and then move ahead so the next vehicle may drop their student(s) off. There is also additional parking in front of the middle school. I realize our parking is very difficult, so I appreciate your patience and help in keeping our students safe. I have included a map that I hope will clarify the drop-off and pick-up areas. Thank you for your cooperation!
School begins at 7:55 A.M.
FASTBRIDGE TEST SCORES
Dear Parents/Guardians,
On Friday, February 4, 2022, your child’s teacher will be sending home your child’s FastBridge scores from their recent FastBridge testing. Your child was assessed in the areas of Reading and Math. At the bottom of your child’s form is the definition of what each test measures and a little information about each assessment. These assessments help us to plan appropriate instruction, monitor academic growth, and identify any need for intervention or enrichment for your child. These assessments are given three times a year and the results will be shared with you each time so you are able to see your child’s progress throughout the school year. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher and as always, ask your child what they are doing in school and ask to see their work. We are here to help and can’t do this without you. Teamwork is always our best bet!
Sincerely,
Lynette Ford

It’s not too early to start planning for next school year. Below is a list of health requirements for entry into 6th grade. The physical exam and immunization record are due by the first day of school.
· Complete physical exam: Please note that a sports physical does not meet the requirement for the 6th grade physical.
· Up - to - date immunizations to include: Tdap, 2- varicella doses, hepatitis B series, and meningococcal vaccine. Please check with your health care provider to be sure these immunizations are included on your child’s 6th grade physical exam.

· Dental exam: due by May 15, 2023
The 6th grade health packets will be sent home, with your child, in the near future. Health forms may also be found on the district website or picked up in the main office. If you have questions about any of these requirements you may contact Mrs. Brummel, School Nurse at 815-786-8498.
AMERICAN HEART MONTH
February is American Heart Month. Heart Disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. Know your risk and protect your heart.
Here are some links to ways your family can increase their daily heart-healthy activities:
Motivating Kids to be Physically Active
From KidsHealth.org - Tips for motivating school-age kids to be physically active.
From U.S. Dept of Health and Human Services - An interactive way to meet the goal of 60 minutes of daily activity for kids ages 6-17.
FEBRUARY IS NATIONAL CHILDREN'S DENTAL HEALTH MONTH
February is also National Children's Dental Health Month. Through a charitable donation from Delta Dental, we were fortunate enough in our district to be the recipients of enough dental health kits and educational materials to provide one to each grade school student in the district. Please watch for these to be coming home with your students in the month of February & take some time to review the handouts and supplies together.
FANTASTIC 4TH GRADE
Here in Fourth grade, the students have been working hard. In reading, they have been reading about natural disasters. The students read a nonfiction book about earthquakes and are now reading a historical fiction book about the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. They will then be writing about the difference between the two texts.
In math, we are working on adding and subtracting fractions. We will then move on to adding and subtracting mixed numbers. This topic can be a bit frustrating when we introduce it, but it is amazing how the students quickly learn how to work with mixed numbers.
In social studies, we are wrapping up our Illinois Projects. The students are creating a Google Slides presentation that is all about Illinois. They are learning to incorporate pictures and text boxes in their presentations. For science, the students are working with the science Foss Kits. Some classes are studying environments, some are studying landforms, and others are working on making circuits and using energy in class.
FABULOUS 5TH GRADE
In January, all classes started D.A.R.E. with Officer Brian Fasnacht. Students will learn many skills for dealing with social situations and the pressures they’ll face. Classes are off to a good start and will continue through the spring.
In math, students are adding to their understanding of fractions with multiplication and division of fractions. Please continue to reinforce with your children how important it is to master multiplication and division facts so that they grasp the many new concepts they’re learning!
Space will be a focus in many areas this month as we continue our science unit called Spaceship Earth with Mystery Science. Our novel for reading involves many space concepts. Famous physicist Stephen Hawking and his daughter Lucy co-wrote the science fiction book fifth-graders are enjoying.
We hope the fifth graders share about what they’re learning here at school with you at home! Thanks for your continued support in their education!
BAND AND MUSIC NEWS
During the month of January, both fourth and fifth grade students have been learning about the guitar. The school has over 30 guitars which students have used to play melodies and chords. Songs such as “Malaguena” and “Secret Agent” used single notes to form the melody. One and two chord songs such as “Shake Your Body (down to the ground),” “Haiti,” and “Paperback Writer” required strumming chords. Once we get into February, we will play songs with three chords.
Fifth grade band is now rehearsing as a full group on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This is in addition to lesson times with small groups. We currently have 12 flutes, 2 oboes, 9 clarinets, 11 saxophones, 7 trumpets, 1 french horn, 5 trombones, and 11 percussionists. Fifth grade’s first band performance will be on Tuesday March 1st at 7pm in the middle school gym. More information will be sent out shortly.
